🌍✨ Throwback to the first HLTH Europe conference in Amsterdam, a hub of innovation and thought leadership in healthcare. Too many insights for one post so I'll be sharing my key takeaways from this event throughout this week. Day 2 at HLTH made it clear that the conviction driving almost everyone here is that AI can save healthcare. A lot will need to change before that happens, of course, and arguably the defining feature of the necessary change will be how many players need to be involved. "AI could change health on a planetary scale on the same level that penicillin changed health,” Dr. Karen DeSalvo, Google’s Chief Health Officer, told us in her Tuesday keynote, before hinting at this complexity: “But to address a health challenge in 2024, a single drug isn't going to cut it." This is partly evidenced by the delegate list here, which has some pharma, but more tech (many early-stage), as well as healthcare providers, and payors. Maybe that’s also why, despite the programme of C-suite panellists and pumping intro soundtracks, HLTH truly centres around conversations, over and above presentations. You can see that from the show floor: loads of informal nooks and networking areas; start-up showcases; people hanging around trying to work out who their 'speed date’ is. People everywhere, in fact, absorbed in discussions. They can't all have already known each other before they got here, surely? Last week at HLTH it was energizing to connect with so many different stakeholders across the healthcare industry. To share a few takeaways: 1) There was lots of chatter about AI, but until we address the underlying broken business model in healthcare, AI can only do so much. We need to shift more dollars into value-based care to align incentives across stakeholders, and then layer on technology to enable efficient payment and delivery of care. 2) The emerging GLP-1 weight loss drugs were another hot topic, but it’s still early days before we know their long-term efficacy. Eventually, I see this leading to ‘whole condition’ value-based models that cover a range of different treatment options and take on financial risk for outcomes. 3) We saw SO many exhibitors or vendors promoting their services, which makes for a crowded and complex market for healthcare purchasers. Not every solution will stick, but given intensifying cost pressure I believe those that can demonstrate hard-dollar, validated savings and ROI will sustain. It was also an honor to take home the best in class trophy at the The Digital Health Hub Foundation and Digital Health Awards for Employer Subsidized Wellness. What an experience at HLTH Europe. I’m starting this week feeling energized about the future of technology’s role in healthcare and how we can all work together – providers, industry, government, and patients – to make an even greater impact.    One of my biggest takeaways: everyone is on a journey to make technology part of how we deliver care and drive new innovations. It was great to learn about the different journeys of my peers as we work towards the collective goal of improving patient care globally.    A few key moments for me:    ▪ My conversation with Nicole Büttner, Mati Gill and Mike Devoy on the role of AI in pharma was really valuable – it brought together a diverse set of perspectives across the industry and proved that we’re better together. I’ll certainly be taking my co-panelists’ insights back to our work at Johnson & Johnson.  ▪ I also sat down with Julien Hobeika, Claire Bloomfield, David Rhew, M.D., and Betsabeh Madani-Hermann where we discussed #GenerativeAI in healthcare. It’s clear: the opportunity of #GenAI is immense, but it’s important to prioritize ethical considerations, implement a robust internal governance, and collaborate with the broader ecosystem. ▪ I had a chance to meet with European Union officials on how we can shape policies that invite innovation while navigating risks. ▪ I spoke to startups who are leading the way in digital therapeutics and data-sharing to reimagine what we can do in healthcare.   Thanks to everyone who I was able to meet and share ideas with. It was a privilege to learn from this group of industry experts and share how we’re leveraging technology in everything we do at #MyCompany.
