Countries from various regions have revealed that Veterinary Services were only included in less than half of whole-of-government frameworks for emergencies and disasters. The rationale for strengthening health systems to counter emerging threats has been never been more convincing, with animal health a key platform. This is why we promote for greater involvement of Veterinary Services in emergency management.

💉 With this weekend’s World Vet Day still fresh in my mind, and our future plans at FOUR PAWS, a global animal welfare organisation, slowly percolating, I am delighted to see this post by World Organisation for Animal Health about Veterinary Servies and their role in emergency management. I support the promotion that any good emergency plan should include the health, safety and welfare of animals 🐾 Here World Organisation for Animal Health says it best: “Countries from various regions have revealed that Veterinary Services were only included in less than half of whole-of-government frameworks for emergencies and disasters.” We need to include the welfare of animals in these kinds of frameworks and preparations, for what affects them, affects us, and vice versa. Why? 🌍 Because of One Health! When disasters strike, animal lives are just as susceptible to injuries, disease and more as humans. If we want strong and inclusive global welfare standards during times of emergency then animals and their welfare need to also be part of the conversation. As we at FOUR PAWS say - if they suffer, we suffer. The challenge of identifying non-accidental injury in animals is increasingly recognized in veterinary practice. This multi-agency training day aims to equip all members of the veterinary team with the necessary skills and understanding to address suspected cases of abuse or non-accidental injuries in pets, livestock, and horses. It covers topics such as recognizing abuse, documenting evidence, legal perspectives, and the importance of a multi-agency approach. Additionally, it provides guidance on handling disclosures from human victims, setting up practice protocols, and establishing links with relevant agencies.
