The current state of childcare is a lose-lose for employers and families alike. On the one hand we have mothers saying: "It’s hard to manage expensive daycare payments with the pay I receive. I wish my job had a daycare center or help with childcare. I have to have my mom take my kids to daycare because I have to be at work before daycare even opens." (Listen to Your Mother's "Working Mothers Speak" 2023 report) And on the other, we have employers reporting significant challenges with retention, turnover, and staffing shortages. It is exciting to see the work of this task force engaging folks from all sectors, and recognizing the important role that employers can play in the solution. I had the honor of sitting in on an MA Early Education and Child Care Task Force listening session with employers yesterday and here are my big takeaways: 1. It was heartening to see so many folks in powerful positions within our state government clearly articulate the complex problem(s) we are facing within our childcare system, and to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to solving them. 2. This issue is complex and multifaceted. As one person put it so perfectly "the current system is a market failure on all sides - we're failing on supply and demand." And so, as with any complex problem, there is no single solution, and it will take an all hands on deck approach. 3. There are many employers who are up for the challenge and are already doing really important work to move the needle. The opportunities to learn from one another and to innovate are endless. 4. Not only is the need there, but so is the will to make real change here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is an exciting moment in time and I am here for it!
