🗞 Preparing Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) for Success 🗞 The 2023 passing rate since the NGN NCLEX-RN was implemented, for first-time IENs, was 52.60% (National Council of State Board of Nursing). Just like the passing rate increased for USA nursing graduates, it also improved for IENs. However, if the IENs were in a program with the same rigor and accrediting standards of nursing programs in the USA, this 52.6% would be considered too low, and the program would be closed. What is the difference? Most IENs do not register in preparation programs, nor they have a mentor or coach with nursing experience in their country of origin and the USA. Commonly, they pay to use a platform created for the US graduates, with little or no guidance. Thus the gap in practice between the professional practice of nursing in their country of origin, vs the professional practice of nursing in the USA is neglected. And we see the results. For a program to succeed, a IEN need a coach, someone with experience in both countries, or at least who can do an assessment, and close the knowledge/practice gap; who cares enough for the candidates to coach them, more like being a "school preceptor" to increase their chance of success. You live and learn. You apply and succeed! #IENsuccessInNCLEX-RN #ProfessionalNursingPractice #SchoolPreceptor #YouLiveAndLearn #YouApplyAndSucceed

For nursing students, hands on, clinical experience is important for mentorship, confidence and learning. The Clinical Externs in Nursing (CEN) program at St. Joseph’s is providing a valuable opportunity for students to develop these essential skills. The CEN Program, funded through the Ontario Ministry of Health, is an additional, paid placements nursing students can take on if selected. For these students, like Isha Rai and Riley Ellis, the CEN Program has helped improve their confidence and fulfill a lifelong dream of being a nurse. Read more about the CEN Program in My St. Joseph’s, and how it’s contributing as a recruitment and retention strategy: https://bit.ly/4b6TOOe

This candle says it all. It used to be don’t confuse your google search with my nursing degree. Now because there are no experienced nurses left to teach the actual nursing skills and knowledge you get after your degree, they have to look stuff up. I’m not saying we never look stuff up, but generally it’s the nursing knowledge and pathopharm you learn from practical application. No one learns that anymore cuz there is no one left to teach it. We don’t learn how to be nurses in nursing school. You learn how to take tests. I never even got to touch a patient hardly in nursing school. We have to do better or they will keep losing. It’s great you are getting millions towards nursing education but if you don’t change the way it’s delivered the same thing will keep happening… they will keep leaving. All of your nurses who have left the bedside should be coming back to teach, coming back to advocate in real ways and not just to people at conferences. Our students and new nurses are NOT attending those events. Thats why I offer free lectures to universities. Let me know how we can help save nursing together.

On this day last year, I didn't expect to be good at what I saw a nursing officer do. We were introduced to the wards for the inception of our clinical rotations as 2nd year nursing students. It was the paediatrics ward, and we had about 9 patients in the cots and beds respectively. While introducing the ward to us, I was in awe to see the nurse identify all patients in the ward, their diagnoses, as well as the medications they were placed on. 😮 I felt it was a superhero ability that not everyone could do. Could I be a superhero, too? I was just about to be proved right when after 12 weeks of concentrated clinical postings in my 3rd year, I was able to do that, too. It was surprising how the medications and their side effects suddenly came naturally to me. Even after leaving the ward, the experiences there remained fresh. For me, it's a philosophy that what you concentrate on is what you get. This is known as a learning curve. In the beginning, everything felt like a huge challenge, like climbing a mountain. But as I kept observing, learning and practising, things started to get easier, and the mountain didn't seem so high anymore. This journey from feeling overwhelmed to gradually getting better at something is exactly what the curve is all about. It's amazing how, with time and effort, what once seemed impossible becomes part of what you can do. Not saying I've learned all I need for nursing practice, but I'm no longer where I used to be. Perhaps someday, I'd be that superhero I saw and more! Have you ever gone through a learning curve like this? How did it feel? #nurses #linkedinnurses #students #linkedinforcreators
