I recently completed a field visit and worksite observation, which is a crucial component of our safety culture at FortisTCI. This practice takes me away from the office and allows me to see how our Powerline Technicians and other field staff are prioritizing safety for themselves and others as they do their jobs. Recent data from the US Bureau of Labor highlighted some troubling statistics regarding workplace fatalities. Electrical Fatalities account for 6% of all workplace fatalities, while Non-electrical occupations make up 70% of workplace electrical fatalities. The leading causes of fatality were working on or near live wires (48%) and overhead power line contact (41%). These numbers serve as a stark reminder of the importance of strong leadership in shaping a safety culture and emphasizing the significance of a safety mindset for everyone. As an electric utility leader, the safety of our employees and customers is always at the forefront of my mind and is one of the key risks that "keeps me up at night." I am happy that our team takes safety seriously and that a culture of safety is instilled, even in our Apprentices Jonas Tucker and DeAndrae Delancy, who, under the guidance of Foreman Kavin Ewing, demonstrated a strong commitment to safety protocols while walking me through their job plan. Kudos to them both! Keep up the excellent work! #PresidentCEO #Leadership #People #SafetyCulture #BestPractice #SafetyProtocols

Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. Construction sites are dynamic work environments – as we work, and as others are working around us, we need to continually assess our situation and make adjustments as needed. When you’re assessing your work set-up, take your time. Look above, below, in front of, behind, and to the sides of your work area. Then, go beyond assessing just in relation to your body – look all around heavy equipment and other items in your work area to ensure there’s nothing potentially hazardous in the vicinity. Your situational awareness will not only keep you safe, but empower you to better perform your tasks as well. At Harlan Electric, Safety is Life. #HarlanElectric #MYRGroup #Safety #ElectricalConstruction #ConstructionSafety

Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. The National Safety Council recognizes June as National Safety Month, an especially good time to purposefully refocus and reflect on the fact that safety is always everyone’s responsibility. All accidents are preventable – with the correct controls, procedures, and our complete focus, we can keep ourselves and our colleagues safe. Use the STAR method – Stop, Think, Act, Review – to ensure you’re taking the time to focus on safety and effectively take the steps needed to create a safe work area. Getting home safely at the end of the day depends on all of us staying focused, communicating effectively, and acting safely at all times. #Safety should be, yes budgeted but non-negotiable. And again, safety is all about attention to #details. Talking about details, the picture below demonstrates #electrical installation #PPEs. Take a deep look, and try to spot the missing element. Why was it ignored? #safetyfirst #peopleops
