Having knee replacement surgery then experiencing complications is something that many patients cite in delaying surgery. Unbalanced ligament tension often leads to complications and patient dissatisfaction in knee replacement surgeries. It’s why Dr. DeClaire’s work is so timely. Here, Dr. DeClaire discusses his recent work and participation in a multi-center study in which a robotic-assisted system was used for total knee arthroplasty planning in 266 patients. “What we found was that when we balance that knee, again within a half a millimeter, which we’re able to measure with this OMNIBot, having a knee that’s slightly tighter medially than laterally at extension and close to equal or tighter medially at mid-flexion and slightly more lax lateral than the medial at flexion created a significant improvement in the KOOS pain score,” Dr. DeClaire told Healio. Happy to share our last research with the Small implants focus group of #EKA! This is a current picture of the usage of unicompartmental knee arthroplasties among european knee surgeons. Many topic reached a high level of agreement: preference for fixed- bearing UKAs, interest in custom-made and robotic UKAs, no age and weight cut-off, TKA preferred in the presence of patellofemoral OA, and a final alignment goal of the predegenerative state both for medial and lateral. ❗ To date, 10-20% of patients remain unsatisfied following total knee arthroplasty (#TKA). In response, orthopaedic surgeons are increasingly leveraging technological advancements. #Robotic-#assisted surgeries have become a significant trend in the field. Increasing evidence also supports a shift from traditional mechanical alignment (MA) to more #personalized #strategies such as restricted inverse kinematic alignment (#iKA). A recent study published by University College Cork in KSSTA Journal investigated the efficacy of a conventionally instrumented, restricted #iKA technique in restoring the constitutional coronal plane alignment of the lower limb during total knee arthoplasty. The technique was applied across a diverse patient cohort of 79 individuals, exhibiting pre-operative #valgus, neutral, and #varus alignments. A range of prostheses was utilized, demonstrating the technique's adaptability. Radiographic measurements were performed #pre- and #post-surgery using #IBLab #LAMA, ImageBiopsy Lab's tool for leg angle measurement (reproducibility of 96%).
