As a Triqui descendant, amoung others in my mestiza heritage, I want to share about Tequio, a core practice in Triqui culture. Tequio is mandatory community service, essential for earning respect and authority in Triqui society—it's a duty and way of life. In Tequio, all able community members (especially men 16+) contribute unpaid work for communal good. This includes agriculture and maintaining community infrastructure. It's a prerequisite for leadership roles, which are proposed yearly by a general assembly. Reciprocity isn't a one-time act or something to offset "sins" like corporate carbon credits. It's an ongoing commitment. In traditions like the Kogi Kaggaba (Colombia), offerings called Pagamentos acknowledge what we take from nature: air, water, food, land. We must uplift indigenous wisdom keepers and their communities who've preserved these medicines for millenia. Let's ensure reciprocity is indigenous-led and truly impactful. What could the concept similar to Tequio look like in Western society? The Torne River International Watershed LIFE (TRIWA LIFE) aim is to improve the state of the aquatic environment within the whole watershed of the River Torne, returning it to its natural state. The restoration measures are aimed particularly at improving living conditions for the green club-tailed dragonfly, bullhead, endangered salmon, trout, freshwater pearl mussel and the protected common otter. Bypass channels will be built at power plants on Tengeliönjoki River. The fishways will open up 970 kilometers of migratory routes. All the culverts in the area will be inventoried. The aim is to remove 399 migration barriers and open up 3366 kilometers of migratory routes. 103 hectares of river and stream environments will be restored to a natural-like status. 2521 hectares of drained mires will be restored. From Conscious Business to Conscious Giving Back It is naturally in the field of Conscious Business that I meet experienced business women and men who, after successfully building up one or more companies, are launching a next project, a project with a content that is particularly close to their hearts. A project for the common good. A project with which they want to give back to nature, to the community,...   A higher-purposeful project like this may be first initiated by a single person's call to giving back – however it may be designed so that many more people can get involved and increase the impact of the cause. Many hearts getting touched, excited, wanting to support. Today I would like to introduce you to a project that too can touch us all and, in a broader sense, does concern us all. Panambi, an initiative by Silvia Hagen and the Panambi Association, was created to preserve and reforest rainforest in Paraguay, to provide a protected space for species and variety diversity, to foster cooperation between cultures, ... You can find many more sensible arguments and heartwarming benefits for the project on the website www.panambi.org Silvia impresses me with her great clarity and sensitivity, which a project and the people in it need so that “it flows well”. (Solving seemingly unsolvable IT network problems used to be her specialty). Even within first steps and results of the Panambi projects' this clarity and heart-opening quality is palpable. There are often flashes of the magic that nature unfolds when you walk with it, learn from it and appreciate it. 🌟 Last week, while I was standing on a red beach - cut off from LinkedIn and most of the world - the social media platform notified my network that the company I founded, Magnar Metals, officially turned 8 years old. 🎉  It's not lost on me the *iron*y of the timing and the location of this event. The red beach I celebrated this milestone on is a product of heavy iron content from a nearby volcano 🌋 on Rabida Island in the Galapagos Islands. Those of you who have known me and Magnar Metals over these past 8 years should get a chuckle from how the universe put these two amazing events together. 🌎  I started Magnar after my time at AK Steel Corporation (now Cleveland-Cliffs), and it has grown leaps and bounds from my experiences and relationships throughout the recycled metals supply chain. ♻ From sustainability consulting to metals brokerage, Magnar Metals has worked with a variety of companies across the industry. 🏭  So why was I on a red beach? At the beginning of this month, I hopped on an airplane, flew to Ecuador ✈️ and joined the LimitLes Travel group for an incredible adventure. 🌊  I can't imagine anywhere else more fitting to celebrate Magnar turning 8 than with a close friend (Lisa Reade) and fellow spirited, successful, entrepreneurial, professional, independent women ✨ encouraging and supporting one another while sharing a once in a lifetime experience through the Galapagos Islands. 🐢  🍃 The trip's location was a reminder of why I am in this industry. It is a passion and a focus on sustainability and keeping those environments and economies around long term. 🌎 Sometimes we find what we do everyday "normal" and this trip was a great reminder that the metals industry is anything but that. ⚙ ✨  To those continuing to show the world what we do - how we continue to reduce carbon emissions, increase recycled ♻ content, improve economies - thank you. 🙏   Here's to the next 8 years (and a return visit aboard Quasar Expeditions)! 🚀   #magnarmetals #entrepreneurship #circulareconomy #sustainability

Designing the Mazingira Day Graphic As a designer, the idea of perfect can be paralyzing. But, as one of my favorite designers, Seso, tweeted, "There is no perfect design, and all it takes to be great is practice." Sometimes, you just have to do it scared. Here’s a bit about the thought process behind this design: ➤ Background Image: Many Kenyans have fond memories of Uhuru Park—from boat rides to family outings. Yet, today, it's not the accessible public space it used to be. Choosing this image was an intentional nod to what we’ve lost and what we need to fight to preserve. (Also, let’s talk about how difficult it is to find that perfect image as a designer! 😅) ➤ October 10 Layout: Using the lake and park as a background for the “October 10” text was a fun design challenge. I found inspiration from a Pinterest post (seriously, if you’re a designer and not using Pinterest for ideas, you’re missing out!) and adapted it to blend in with the natural theme of Mazingira Day. ➤ Wangari Maathai Quote: This was a no-brainer. There is no Uhuru Park without her legacy, and including this quote felt like a small tribute to her efforts in keeping our green spaces alive. (Fun fact: I originally picked a different quote from her, but my employer thought it was a bit too grim 😂) This graphic is more than just a design—it’s a message about advocating for our environment while embracing the ups and downs of growing as a designer. Working across the pillars under The Datai Pledge, partner NGOs and social enterprises such as The Kansha Life Project (a social enterprise that seeks to be a sustainable hotspot combining entrepreneurship, spirituality, and sustainability), Green Growth Asia Foundation (an NGO whose aim it is to respond to sustainability challenges in Asia through ‘green growth’ programmes), and MareCet (the only NGO in Malaysia dedicated to marine mammal conservation), all come together with members of the community and our team, to improve the well-being of the environment, wildlife and community of Langkawi, ensuring that we preserve its treasures for future generations to cherish.
