Warfare, death--and truth Warfare is about killing and dying. This much we know. We ordinarily emphasize the role of killing. I suggest that the institution of war revolves rather around dying. The objective of war is the death of the soldier. Warfare is an institution that produces corpses. Historians focus upon who “wins” a war and who “loses.” Nations engage in warfare, it has been assumed, to determine who the “winner” will be, and who the loser. But what if this way of looking at war —how we always have looked at it—is obsolete. If warfare is not primarily about killing, nor about winning or losing, what is war all about? I hypothesize that the institution of warfare revolves around the issue or question of truth. That for which we die becomes true. The truth emerges, not only by virtue of the death of our enemy, but by virtue of the death of our own soldiers. We wage war to demonstrate our sincerity. Death constitutes a testament or testimonial; a demonstration that we believe in our sacred ideals. The proof of the pudding is in the dying.

Should the Christian soldier disobey his orders, even at the risk of being executed for his disobedience? In such a situation, he must weigh one evil against another: the evil of participating in the invasion, against the evil of leaving his family without material support. Did you know that almost all of the weapons mentioned in The War for Achimede were actual weapons used by real historical figures? The Kopis sword (displayed below), utilized by the monstrous Yaramayhawhos and the Velorians, was a real sword (or sometimes considered a knife) used by Greek hoplites for combat. Some historians think that pagans used it for sacrifices. It was a short sword used as a side-arm when the Greeks did not use spears. Alexander the Great may have used this sword in combat. Similarly, Peter and Eman's Xiphos sword was also a Greek side-arm similar to the Kopis, only it was no longer and more common than the Kopis. Also, the tepoztopilli (used by Mahali Tejihan) was a real spear used by the Aztecs. Finally, the Roman pillum was also a real weapon used by Ergossian troops. What made the pillum unique was that it was not a spear in the traditional sense. At the top of the wooden shaft was a long shank. The shank was purposefully made to where, if you threw it, it would bend. The Romans did this so the enemy could not throw the spear back. The spear could also get lodged deep into a wooden shield, rendering it unusable. The only weapons in the book that are not real are the Sword of Strength and the Spice Arrows. Everything else was real or very much based on a real weapon. I hope you found these facts as interesting as I did!

History is full of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Often behind the scenes but they make the difference. To me, the lesson of history is that everybody has flaws (without exception) yet those flaws do not negate their great achievements. In fact, it makes life more interesting – no matter what you have done or mistakes you have made, you can still achieve great things. We need to stop trying to cancel anybody in history who has not been perfect – there would be no one left to study. And that includes the morons that are trying to cancel people – I promise you that they are not without flaws themselves … maybe it is their guilty conscience that is motivating them. I encourage everybody to study history and if you find that a person has achieved great things and also had significant flaws then you should celebrate that. Go ahead and identify the flaws but remember that the great things they achieved are still great. I’m sure Col Glover (full transparency, a distant relative) was not perfect, but he did what needed to be done and he did it well. For those that are looking for something negative, chew on this: “Glover and his Marblehead militia … Officially known as the 14th Continental Regiment, the Marblehead militia was an extraordinary fighting force. It was a fully integrated unit of Latin, White, Black and Native American troops, and at least one Jewish member, who worked together on the high seas before battling the Brits. About 20 percent of the unit was non-White, according to regimental rolls.” Read, study, and understand history – don’t try and change it to match your preconceived notions and beliefs. You will be surprised what you might learn when you open your mind. The closest many will get to understanding the carnage and sacrifice of the D-Day Landings 80 years ago today will be through watching films like Saving Private Ryan or visiting museums. Over 4000 allied forces lost their lives on 6 June 1944 to help defeat the Nazi ideology 80 years ago, so that today we can enjoy the freedoms we have, and too often take for granted. It is our duty to protect the freedoms we have and never forget those that laid down their lives in 1944 and throughout two World Wars. It is duty too to also educate our children and future generations to commemorate days like today. Find articles like the one below with facts about D-Day they can read to understand the sacrifices.
