Thought we'd close out the week by sharing our new project, 'Banished', with you all! Our aim was to build a number of looping effects that layer together to produce a sequence of stages that would play out over the duration of a banishment ritual. From a gameplay perspective, this banishment ritual is triggered by a player when a demon is slain and then must be protected by the player until the ritual is completed. For this project, we heavily utilized Houdini to generate data that we then converted into vertex colours to drive our effects shaders in Unreal Engine 5. The Cartoon Network website was a treasure trove for fans, offering full episodes and clips from beloved shows such as "Adventure Time," "Teen Titan GO," and "The Amazing World of Gumball." The closure of the Boomerang subscription service for integration into Max was a significant transition, and now, this marks another step in their consolidation efforts. Lately, I've shared a few personal beliefs: -> Cherish the sources of childhood joy -> Adapt and embrace changes in the industry But after this news, I feel a mixture of nostalgia and disappointment. No celebratory post this time. I took some time to reflect on why this development hit me harder than expected. Why was I nostalgic yet a bit downhearted? Here’s what I found: 🚩 The charm of exploring a dedicated space for Cartoon Network's classics is incomparable. 🚩 The shifts in media consumption habits, while necessary, often tug at the heartstrings of long-time fans. It’s all about finding the balance between accepting inevitable changes and cherishing the memories they disrupt. Celebrate the legacy of what was, but stay open to the new horizons in store. Onward to embracing the future of how we access our favorite shows P.S. This reminded me of that inspiring video featuring Fred Rogers. Because there are certainly many paths that can lead to practicing it out of passion, and especially as a profession, and each of us has our own personal story in this regard. But I am sure that all of us sooner or later have asked ourselves the question, faced with difficulties, frustrations, failures, but also possible great satisfactions, whether ours is fundamentally a profession like the others, or whether it is not rather a kind of "vocation". Of which certain artists, although inserted in a large industrial factory (that is very little inclined towards the emergence of individual talent as was historically the case with Disney, but also Warner, DreamWorks, etc.) are the reference models. An interesting article... I've produced or exec produced independent animated movies at $4m, $7m and $13m, all of which received theatrical distribution and critical acclaim. It's a tough industry for independent animation. Especially if you're trying to get original IP or a film that wants to play to an older audience into production. Whether you like it or not, distributors tend to regard animation as family fare, which means your film needs to play to age 5+ or they probably won't buy it. This limits what you can develop and raise money for. There's also prejudice from distributors about the perceived cost of a film. In live-action, it can be a badge of honour to say for how little the film was made... in animation that boast has the opposite effect. And Chris is so right about the culture and heritage of a studio being what determines the budget level at which it is comfortable or even able to produce films. The difficulty now is that the market *has* changed... a studio can't keep producing $200m animated features that don't become runaway successes without needing to change how it does things or fold down its structure. Let's change how we do things.
