#WorldSpaceWeek 2024 This week, at the University of Düsseldorf's first semester welcoming event, the #UNIVERSEH booth took off! 🌍🔭 In celebration of #WorldSpaceWeek, the stand provided a unique opportunity to explore how space connects us all, beyond borders and disciplines. UNIVERSEH offers students the chance to engage with the future of space exploration through international programs, mobility opportunities, and interdisciplinary studies.🛰️ The display emphasized that space is not just the domain of scientists and engineers—it’s a field that invites students from all backgrounds, whether they’re interested in technology, business, law, or the arts, to contribute to this expanding frontier. 🚀✨ UNIVERSEH is creating pathways for students to become part of this global space community, helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to succeed in this dynamic field. With events like this, the message is clear: space is for everyone, and the future is brighter when people from different walks of life come together to dream big. #UNIVERSEH #WorldSpaceWeek #SpaceForEveryone #EuropeInSpace #InnovationInSpace #SpaceExploration #NextGenPioneers #InterdisciplinaryEducation #GlobalCollaboration

The next cohort of the online Space Education Course from ARES Learning will be run at two times... one ideal for the Americas, and one meant for Europe and Africa. Which works best for you?🌎🌍 This isn't just an introduction to space science or the history of space exploration. The course explores why space is important to people on Earth, what's happening in the growing space economy, and how we might best prepare for humanity's future in space. The 12 modules include a focus on the skill sets and mindsets needed to succeed in a fast moving unpredictable future, including the Explorer's Mindset, Moonshot Thinking, Design Methods, Operational Mindset, and more. Later modules get into issues of ethics, governance, and sustainability... not to mention avoiding existential threads and achieving our higher aspirations. Though designed with a focus on K12 education, the course is also ideal for informal educators of all kinds, and any space enthusiast interested in an inspiring lifelong learning opportunity. 🚀 Sign up here for the new EU and Africa Cohort: https://lnkd.in/gbTCtWAP And for the Americas, sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gzyxYE2N Of course, if either time works better for you (regardless of your timezone), sign up for that one! #astronomyeducation #careerreadiness #edtech #NGSS #overvieweffect #scienceeducation #spaceeconomy #spaceeducation #spaceexploration #spacephilosophy #spacepsychology #spaceworkforce2030 #STEMeducation #STEAMeducation #workforcedevelopment

UCL joins Space South Central cluster 🚀🤝 University College London (UCL) has joined the UK’s largest regional space cluster, Space South Central, as an academic partner. Space South Central connects business and academia to encourage innovation, collaboration and growth across the thriving space sector in Hampshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. The region boasts a £3 billion industry, comprising more than 170 space-related organisations and employing around 14,000 people. UCL’s location will strengthen ties between London’s business and academic networks and key space industry sector partners in the south of England. Space South Central’s work to promote the cluster’s space capabilities overseas will also benefit from UCL’s international profile, building on the region’s annual £1.64 billion of export revenue and £65 million in foreign investment. ESA scholarship for Belgian graduates available at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg As each year, ESA has made a number of scholarships available to be awarded to European candidates from ESA Member States, having acquired as a minimum a bachelor’s degree with good standing. The requirement of ESA is to have a spread over the different Member States and therefore to give priority to countries which have no scheduled participants. As the next class is being composed, it is noted that at this point in time there are no candidates from Belgium for the next academic year. As a reminder, the studies lead to an accredited M.Sc. degree in Space studies, but the interdisciplinary nature of the program also attracts, beside engineering and physical sciences graduates, students with life sciences, economy, policy and law, international relations and other backgrounds, demonstrating an interest in a career in the space sector. Intern Insight #7 by OSC's student intern Chad McElroy: Working in Washington, D.C., is showing me how the budgetary process impacts decision-making for agencies as large as NASA and as small as college student governments. Federal agencies generally depend on annual Congressional appropriations for funding, which encourages agencies to prioritize their programs in accordance with anticipated budgets and the surrounding fiscal environment. As budgets can fluctuate year-to-year, agencies must sometimes make decisions that save money in the short-term, yet are not necessarily beneficial in the medium or long-term. A recent example is NASA’s cancellation of the VIPER rover, a mission that would have searched for water ice at the Moon’s south pole after being delivered by a Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) lander. While the rover may have unearthed important scientific insights, NASA found itself unable to support the mission in light of other priorities. This reminded me of my time in student government back at Claremont McKenna College, where as a chairman for our Senate Administrative Affairs and Appropriations committee, I often had to make case-by-case decisions on student budget requests that were dependent on, and highly restricted by, the Senate’s overall budget. Now working in a government agency, I can see how the same dynamics can apply, albeit with a much larger budget!

As you prepare for the new academic year... learn how YOU can engage and motivate students by connecting with their excitement about space! And.. reinvigorate your own love of teaching with a focus on a hopeful future. You don’t have to be a science teacher… space education helps students meet the standards whatever your grade level or subject area. Your students don’t have to be STEM enthusiasts either… space is for everyone, even writers, artists, and athletes. The space economy is booming and you can help your students prepare to be part of humanity’s multiplanet future! You may not be confident about talking to your students about space... but this course is designed to raise your awareness of what’s possible, and to give you the resources (and proven methods) you need to get results that speak for themselves. The new cohort starts September 4 and space is limited.
