Program Highlight: Mental Health First Aid May being Mental Health Awareness month, we wanted to talk about our Mental Health First Aid program at Valley Cities. WHAT is mental health first aid? Just as CPR training prepares people without medical backgrounds to help someone who is having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid trains people to help someone who is at risk of developing a mental health problem or who is going through a mental health crisis. This training, offered FREE to those over 18 living or working in King County gives participants the resources and skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to someone experiencing a crisis, using a 5-step action plan. Interested in learning more about the program? Look no further than https://lnkd.in/gSJkF3Gi

When it comes to mental health, our attention often centers on helping those in need. However, it's just as important to consider the well-being of first aid responders. Mental Health First Aid training has taught me how to provide initial support and help until appropriate professional help can be accessed as well as how to recognize and support first aid responders who may be experiencing their own challenges. #mentalhealth #firstaid #support #wellbeing

First working week of 2024 done ✅ I spent two days this week completing ‘Standard Mental Health First Aid’ training. We were asked at the start of the course what we wanted to achieve by completing the course. Mine was to ‘gain a better understanding of mental health conditions’. Not only did I gain a much better understanding of mental health conditions, I also learned: - how to provide initial support to someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis, - signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, - where and how to get professional help, - what types of help that research has shown to be effective; and - how to provide First Aid in a crisis situation I also got to meet some of my fellow TAFE Queensland colleagues and visit a few I don’t get to see as often. Brandon Taylor TAFE Queensland Manager of Mental Health and Wellbeing and accredited Mental Health First Aid Instructor facilitated the course. Brandon did an excellent job of explaining the content, allowing us to ask questions, share stories and made the two days really valuable and informative. For anyone wanting to learn more about this topic, you should consider doing this course. You can find more info here:

Mental Health First Aid training is essential for all managers (and of enormous benefit to everyone) when we consider: - One in five Australians experience some form of mental illness in any year. - Only 35% receive professional help during that year. - The longer people delay getting help and support, the more difficult their recovery can be.* By updating my accreditation, I was reminded how a little knowledge can combat stigma and make us all (hopefully) kinder and more useful to others. * Source: Mental Health First Aid Australia #MHFA #firstaid #essentialtraining

In 2018, MHFA England® undertook an independent study on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Two Day courses around the world, focusing on the effects of knowledge, stigma, and helping behaviour post course. They found: ✳ MHFA training improves mental health first aid knowledge, recognition of disorders, and beliefs about the most effective forms of treatment for mental health issues. ✳ MHFA training reduces stigma, increases confidence in assisting someone with a mental health issue and increases intentions to provide mental health first aid to a small extent. ✳ These effects were evident up to six months after completing the training Our next classroom Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Two Day course will be running next month: 📆 March 27th and 28th 📍 Chertsey 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eAmk_rQG 📆 April 9th, 12th, 16th, 19th 📍 Online 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dtNaN6kN #mhfaenglandtraining #mentalhealthfirstaid #mentalhealthawareness
