Staffing was challenging even before the pandemic and turnover is a huge cost driver. But has your team put into place a planned policy on clinician well-being? If you are in a value-based contract (VBC) where outcomes and patient satisfaction are measured, measuring clinician well-being and improving on it can be a driver of positive performance in your VBC contract. As this article states, "...among physicians, poor clinician well-being metrics are associated with worse patient safety and outcomes. Similarly, a systematic review suggests a clear relationship between nursing workforce constructs (that is, burnout) and patient safety, quality of care, and productivity." Have you started to measure clinician well-being metrics? What metrics are you using to measure well-being? What steps are you taking to improve this metric? https://okt.to/nU4qA3

More than four years after COVID-19 emerged, hospitals in the U.S. are still struggling with its long-term impacts. Financial challenges persist, with Kaufman Hall reporting that 40% of hospitals operate at a loss, widening the performance gap between institutions. Rural hospitals face unique pressures, compounded by structural issues existing before the pandemic. Despite some financial recovery, rising labor costs, and talent shortages hinder progress, particularly as healthcare workers demand flexibility and better work-life balance. Leaders like Susan Turney of Marshfield Clinic Health System and Lyndon Edwards of Loma Linda University Health emphasize that post-pandemic pressures are ongoing, especially with increased patient acuity and mental health needs. The pandemic accelerated digital transformation and adaptation of AI, creating both challenges and opportunities for healthcare systems. Industry leaders highlight that the misconception of returning to "normal" belies the sector's current reality, as hospitals navigate evolving workforce dynamics and a faster pace of change. Successfully adapting requires balancing innovation with quality care delivery. Our team of professionals helps hospitals navigate post-pandemic challenges by offering strategic support in financial management, workforce optimization, and technological integration. We provide tailored solutions to improve operational efficiency, enhance patient care, and adapt to evolving industry demands, ensuring hospitals remain resilient and capable of delivering high-quality healthcare. UPMC and it's President Leslie Davis are deliberately causing future health problems for its patients with their current masking policy Logically their policy is non-sensical due to its definitions & exemptions (which I understand exempts the administrative offices like the one Leslie Davis occupies) Definitions & Exemptions UPMC requires anyone in their facility* to wear a mask unless you have a medical reason to not do so, or are 2 years old or younger. *Facility = Hospitals, Outpatient medical centers, Senior living facilities, Freestanding medical offices, Other UPMC medical buildings where patient care is provided. *Facility ≠ nonmedical UPMC facility (read sports arena like the @penguins @steelers practice facilities + research, admin, wellness, community outreach centers) How does RSV, Flu or Covid variant understand when it is in a non-medical UPMC Facility? Or that the bearer/recipient is 2 years or younger and therefore exempt? How does this deliberately cause future health problems for patients? First: Because some portion of patients won't go to the doctor due to the mask mandate. This delays care, leading to worse outcomes. UPMC would be smarter to institute the protocols of the Great Barrington Declaration and protect the old, sick and vulnerable of the population. Jay Bhattacharya Second This mandate also leads to a lower standard of care because the mandate is delivered from the Executive Office, but enforced by the front line work force. The front line people hate being the mask police. But they can't afford to be fired for not enforcing policy. So they are caught in a bad position and high quality people don't hang out in those situations for long. The result is that the front line people who are good/great, leave the medical system. Who remains? The lesser quality, less experienced and/or very close to retirement age. Or the people AHN wouldn't hire.... Third UPMC looks like an unserious organization with second rate talent leading the organization. See paragraph above as to why this is becoming a self reinforcing reality. And check out AHN (Allegheny Health Network) where no mask mandate exists. -> Their current tag line is "We See You". Brilliant play on words. https://lnkd.in/eVD8czHj

What is the #1 key to better health according to the American Medical Association? Patient engagement! Sara Berg, MS, news editor for the AMA notes that when patients are dealing with their healthcare conditions, one of the biggest predictors of long-term chronic condition management is whether patients are involved in a team-based approach known as 'heath coaching', a practice that places patients' health priorities at the epicenter. Following it has helped patients become active participants in their own care, leading to: • Improved outcomes & reduced costs • Stronger patient-doctor relationships • More joyful healthcare experiences Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e45rvbjY #HealthcareMarketing #PatientEngagement #PatientCare #PatientSupport #PatientSupportAdvocacy #HealthPriorities #HealthRisks #HealthConditions #CreativeOperations American Medical Association To understand patient health priorities, ask: "What matters to you?"
