Call for papers for a focus issue on Safety, Reliability, and Trustworthiness of Intelligent Transportation Systems in SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles. Guest editors: Dr. Ci Liang, Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and Martin Törngren, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. More information here: https://lnkd.in/eQZhJRsf, and submit your research here: https://lnkd.in/et9bj7Fq. Valentin Ivanov (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany, and Associate Editor for the journal) has this to say: "For me, an SAE publication can be counted as a mark of recognition in the automotive engineering community. Compared to competing journals from different publishers and professional societies, SAE technical and scholarly papers and journals demonstrate a strong balance between sophisticated and conceptual studies on the one hand and descriptive technical reports on the other. By publishing with SAE, I can definitely expect that my findings will target various audiences in the field of mobility technologies and relevant cross-domain areas, ranging from students and engineers to policy makers." #intelligenttransportation #infrastructure #autonomousvehicles

The ProtAct-Us kick-off meeting officially takes place this week. In the transport sector, the vision zero describes the EU's goal of reducing the number of seriously injured and road deaths to zero. In a constantly changing mobility environment, which is currently characterised in particular by high levels of automation, innovative vehicle concepts and a high number of vulnerable road users (VRU), ensuring the safety of everyone involved is a major challenge. The Institute of Automotive Engineering (ika) and the University Hospital of RWTH Aachen University, together with other research and industrial partners from Europe, have been awarded a grant for the EU project "ProtAct-Us". The project represents a flagship project for interdisciplinary cooperation between the technical and medical faculties of RWTH Aachen University. #rwth #rwthaachen #automotive #automotiveengineering #EU

Our Editors are working on the frontiers of mobility research. Kevin Bai and Srikanth Pilla spoke with SAE International about their new patents with promising applications for more #sustainable automotive industry practices. Read the full SAE Blog post here to learn about their work: https://sae.to/3I0klR6 In addition to their patents, they reinforced the importance of publishing high-quality research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Kevin remarked, “Working on OEMs and their suppliers gives me the opportunity to learn how to publish both a technical paper and a patent within an industry setting.” Kevin and Srikanth were both included on the list of the world’s top 2% of scientists (compiled by Stanford University researchers). Srikanth Pilla, Editor-in-Chief of the SAE International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, Energy, Environment, & Policy, is currently the Director of the UD Center For Composite Materials at the University of Delaware. He is also the Founding Director of ‘AIM for Composites’, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded Energy Frontier Research Center. His current research interests are in the fundamentals and applications of sustainable and lightweight functional materials and manufacturing. Pilla has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed archival publications. Hua “Kevin” Bai, Associate Editor of the SAE International Journal of Electrified Vehicles, is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2007. His current research interests include power electronics (particularly wide-bandgap devices) with motor drives, electric vehicle battery chargers, auxiliary power modules and battery energy storage systems. He is the author of two books, around 140 peer-reviewed papers, and over 12 industrial patents. #futureofmobility #automotiveindustry #research

Last week during HANNOVER MESSE, we had the pleasure to unveil our new white paper "Accelerating battery cell development", which we wrote with our partner RWTH Aachen University. 🐌💸 As PEM Director Professor Achim Kampker says, the european battery industry has a snail's pace and price problems: "The processes for developing and manufacturing new battery cells are still too slow and the costs too high. We must innovate while catching up." 🔋 In this study, our experts explore battery cell engineering challenges and potentials, proposing an improved development approach to streamline time-to-market. They outline the importance of a digital end-to-end toolchain to bolster cell development. Discover why standardized procedures, early integration of product and process, advanced simulation, and clear data transparency are essential for competitive development and production of battery cells and thus for a competitive and sustainable future of energy supplies in electromobility. 👉 Click here for the publication: https://lnkd.in/daaT3Jce #Emobility #Battery #HM24 #PEM #Sustainability #ClimateTech Marcus Fiege, Pierre Bagnon, Vincent Charpiot, Michael Müller, Cyril Garcia, Roshan Soorunsingh Gya, Laurent BROMET, William Rozé

New paper out in the SAE International Journal of Advances and Current Practices in Mobility. Low temperature heat release (LTHR) can help promote very high-efficiency gasoline engines by promoting ultra-lean combustion. In this paper we introduce a new technique to explore LTHR when isolated from the main combustion event (HTHR). We look at the LTHR behaviour of iso-octane/air and n-heptane/air mixtures at a range of pressure and temperature conditions. This paper also just won the SAE Myers award! Big thanks to Samuel W. and Abdullah Umair Bajwa at the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science for their excellent work on this paper. Also to JLR, EPSRC, Siemens Digital Industries Software, and IAAPS for their collaborations in the Prosperity Partnership that made this work possible.
