Team Impossible had the privilege of learning at the University of Health and Performance this week. Words can’t express the impact this experience had on myself and our team. A great reminder that we all need to be open to guidance and make the time to reflect and grow.
A huge thank you to Matt Hesse @johnnymartin, @douglindsay, @wesnorthey, @huntershurrer, @kellyhoward, @bendurham, @brandiharstedt, Chef Wes, Chef Ben, and our team for being fully engaged, vulnerable and supportive. Highly recommend this executive leadership experience!
When we started UHP with the intent to serve Veterans through transition eduction, we had no intention on going into the leadership development space. However, as we collaborated with corporate leaders from Walmart to GNC in our Veteran work, it became clear there was a desire, and moreover a need for a new kind of leadership development experience.
With the changing times and world of remote work, and social media stimulation, there is more need than ever to get teams together, away from technology, and into an integrated serene space to build social tribe. And in this way the military and Veteran population can teach corporate America something, that tribes are formed when leaders get intrinsically connected with each other, in the field, away from distractions.
It’s ironic, we formed UHP in many ways to teach Veterans how to think and communicate like civilians, and here we are helping civilians think and communicate like our military, it’s a symbolic virtuous circle of work. Our team lives for this work, and am grateful for leaders like Sherene Jagla and her team at Impossible Foods for leaning in, trusting us, and letting us help them build to the culture they deserve.
To our leadership coaches, Douglas Lindsay, PhD, John Martin, Kelly Howard, Dr. Wesley Northey, Hunter Schurrer, M.Ed., CSCS, RSCC D, Laura LovellTy Gowans, outstanding delivery and support of the Impossible team.

Today was the last day of our DHU Healthcare Inspire coaching led leadership development programme - at least for cohort 7!
What a blast!
Not only did we reflect, appreciate and reaffirm - we celebrated, shared, questioned and committed.
We also had an opportunity to teach-back - and wow! My cohort colleagues are hidden thespians! Amazing role plays to illustrate some of the specifics we have learned on our journey!
Thank you to Kate Mason-Keaney Julia Barry from Fields of Learning for literally offering us inspirational insight.
Thank you to Sue Sonia Nat Trudi Kumba Julie Damian Isaac for being an awesome bunch to learn and laugh with.
And to Kirsty Osborn who has been an exceptional wingman and lead as part of her own coaching journey.
Thanks to Jenny and Pauline from our exec team for coming along to our safe space and being open to actively listening to our radical candour.
Thanks also to Stephen Bateman who promised me back in March that if I attended I had his complete backing to attend without interruption and would be able to complete. You made that happen (first time in 7 or 8 leadership development programme attempts over 38 career years 😄).
At the risk of sounding like Gwyneth at the Oscars one final thank you. To Vanilla Ice, Queen and David Bowie.
#YouHadToBeThere 🤣🤣🤣
In nearly all of my employment history, I have ended up in some sort of leadership position.
Key holder
Store manager
Clinical Coordinator
Practice manager
Director
Leader in Training
Facilitator
President
I got so much wrong about leadership in those early days and to be honest, sometimes I still do. The difference in the early days was that I was not teachable. I knew the way. I followed the directions. Worked off of policy manuals and demanded others to do the same.
I lead through power and consequence.
I lead through organizational rules.
I lead through hierarchy and authority
I lead by trying to be liked.
I lead through my knowledge and the gap in theirs.
In hindsight, I wasn’t a good leader. I was young and unwilling to have any of it go differently. But I kept finding myself having leadership thrust upon me and I knew it had to go differently.
I have learned over the past few years continuing my growth as a leader that relationship is the most critical success factor. Relationships are everything and relationships cannot be built without trust. I also learned to take complete responsibility for whomever I have the privilege of leading. Their function is a direct reflection of the leader that I am or am not.
Leadership requires:
Trust
Relationship
Responsibility
…and a bonus for vulnerability. Which might actually be ALL that is needed to be an impactful leader.
Excited to co-lead 15 incredible men at our retreat next week with my partner Alex.

Yall can call me Coach Kaela now 😁
I've been on a journey to figure out how I can cultivate a unique skill set that aligns with my passion, interests, and strengths while enhancing the experience of those I love working with. So when the amazing Telandria Boyd-Johnson, MPA, PHR, SHRM-CP shared with me the opportunity to participate in the BetterUp Coaching Foundations program, I jumped at the opportunity.
It felt like the stars had aligned as I had been thinking about how to sharpen my coaching capabilities because as a DE&I practitioner, I frequently find myself coaching business and HR leaders on equitable and inclusive leadership behaviors. Additionally, I have been coaching my peers on how they can amplify themselves to get to that next stage in their careers. This program has given me many many tools to be a better resource for both groups while giving me something new and challenging to engage in. With being on the neurodiverse spectrum... finding new things to learn that get me excited to learn isn't easy.
I can't wait to put these learnings into practice with my partners, peers, colleagues, and communities. Continuous learning isn't always easy or quick, but it's definitely rewarding in the end.

Executives are human too! Many people ask what kind of conversations I have when coaching Executives. The most common include conversations around;
Alignment within the Executive team
Strategy related insights
Health & wellbeing support including introducing new habits in this area
Insight into dealing with difficult team members
Prioritisation and Delegating, learning to do both these things
Mastery level use of calendar's for all things not just work
Emotional intelligence and the development of empathy
Perception and how the person is coming across to others
Influence & Impact
If you have ever wondered if Executive Coaching is for you, ask yourself what benefit you would gain from having an unbiased expert ear in relation to the above. Reach out if you are ready to start or continue your Leadership development journey.
Everyday I work in management I remind myself of the impact I can have on my direct reports. I have been fortunate to work with managers such as Jeremy DeLeon, Joshua Cale Flick, Natalia Velasco, CHRM., Timothy Mackey and Heather Louviere who instilled this reality in me with the positive impact they had on my life and my development as a professional🙏🏼 I couldn't be more grateful for these people and even more so the example they set for me.
I consider myself fortunate to have experienced the positive side of this dynamic, but encountering a manager that doesn't fully realize this impact has weighed on me in ways I did not think we're possible 😕 In the long run these moments have made me stronger and provided me with an example of what I don't want to be as a leader.
I have been leading teams for over five years now, nothing is more rewarding than helping someone realize their potential and find peace in their process 🙌🏼 The relationships I have built with past or present employees is something I cherish and will never take for granted because I recognize the impact I can have. While I write this from the perspective of a manager I truly believe you can lead from any level if you are kind, caring and persistent in how you show up for others♥️
