Sense about Science will be running a FREE, practical, and interactive online Standing up for Science workshop for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) on Friday 12th July. The workshop aims to build the confidence and skills of ECRs to engage in the public discourse around science, research, and the research process. Hear from researchers further along in their careers about their experiences, good and bad, of working with the media and policy worlds, from experienced media and policy professionals about how their worlds work and what they need from scientists to operate effectively, and receive tools and insights on how best to communicate some of the most complex issues of science and evidence. Theory vs Practical knowledge Knowledge, often categorized as theoretical or practical, is a topic of passionate debate, especially among scientists. Last week, my team and I visited a village school for a #KPIT-organized CSR activity. We trained 8th and 9th graders on one of the science topics in the curriculum “Air Pressure” with about 5-6 daily routine activities. Managing teens is a tough job, especially when they are in a judgmental mood, but the whole experience was really helpful for us and the teens to understand their psychology and keep them engaged throughout the hour-long session. Topics covered ✍️ Air Existence ✍️Air resistence ✍️Air flow from high pressure to low pressure ✍️Air occupies space and has expansion property ✍️Air exerts pressure ✍️Why Dams are narrow bulit wider at lower part then upper part .. and many more Kids found hands-on activities more satisfying than theory classes, as it encouraged them to think creatively and gain practical knowledge through experimentation. Can we justify theoretical knowledge? Ideally, no. Without theory, kids wouldn't connect the concept to activities. "Where theory is often taught in the ideal of a vaccum, the practical is learned through the reality of life" ❗️❗️Analogous to this my experience in #LPCC was, practical concepts include handling rejections, ice-breaking thru' anonymous interviews, active listening in Netflix sessions, setting small measurable goals, and self-reprimanding for breaking discipline. and others.❗️❗️

Consultant in online learning and OER - all sectors - policy, quality, benchmarking, competitor research, due diligence
Very gratified as an ICDE member to see this event, demonstrating to an old-time (2005-15) benchmarker like myself that, despite his occasional "Gandalf Stormcrow" pessimism on the issue, benchmarking online learning in higher education is alive and well - and not yet dominated by commercial interests. More generally, it has increasingly struck me as odd in the last two years of increasing financial pressure on universities in several countries (UK and US but not only them) that standard change management approaches such as ABC, BPR and MIT90s (dating from the early1990s) and used by many early adopters are now used so little, being it seems replaced not by new-generation successors or reasoned process transformation in undergraduate teaching (the core mission) but by nothing much more than special pleading to government (plus funders, alumni, etc) and staff cuts. Of course competitor analysis is particularly frowned upon as each institution is "unique" (despite being increasingly similar). Benchmarking can provide a cooperative framework where some level of analysis of others is permissible.
ICDE invites you to this upcoming webinar: "Best Practices and Research Collaboration in Online and Open Higher Education: A Benchmarking Approach" 📅 29 October 2024, 10:00 UTC+1 🏫 Hosted by Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University 🔗 Register: https://lnkd.in/dMGgE6GC 💡 The Benchmarking Framework for Online, Open, Smart, and Technology-Enhanced Higher Education is an assessment tool for online and open universities aimed to identify its strengths and vulnerabilities and benchmark themselves in a rapidly evolving landscape of higher education. 💬 Take part in this webinar to gain insights into the framework’s components and its practical application, hear from experts presenting best practices, and engage with a growing community dedicated to educational excellence.
