Housing is the overlooked opportunity for achieving the gains we need across so many sectors - for our health, education and livelihood, and environment. It’s time for adequate and affordable housing to be a global priority. #housingforall #slumupgrading #adequatehousing #citiesforpeople
"Housing has been our collective failure. And we need to address it. 2.8 billion people globally are affected by some form of housing vulnerability, be that affordability inadequate housing, or homelessness." The creation and preservation of #affordablehousing have never been more crucial🏠 Beyond the immediate and humane objective of preventing homelessness, affordable housing serves as a powerful stimulant to our economy. When individuals are freed from the burden of exorbitant rent, they can channel their time and resources into local businesses, fostering economic growth and community resilience. Affordable housing provides a foundation that allows citizens to thrive, contributing to a more stable and prosperous society for all. By prioritizing affordable housing, we not only safeguard the well-being of countless families but also invigorate our local economies, creating a robust and sustainable future🙌 #homelessnessawareness #homelessoutreach #homelessawareness

Urban informality in the Global South. Justice, equity, inclusion. Housing, climate, communities. Views expressed are my own.
As extreme weather events and disasters continue to become more frequent and severe, the impacts of inadequate housing will too. We must join forces to address this collective failure by breaking down the policy and finance barriers to adequate, safe housing for all. #HousingForAll #ResilientHousing

Before we shift the discussion to rural homelessness in tomorrow's episode, here's a few numbers to know. 5.6 million. That's how many rural households spend 30% (another important number) of their income on rent. Affordable rural housing is one of the many things discussed in this episode. Our thanks to Housing Assistance Council and National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) for sharing their expertise. https://bit.ly/3UeieQP

At tomorrow's election, whoever you decide to vote for, we ask that you keep these three priorities in mind👇 To end homelessness for good, we need... ✅To invest in services and schemes with clear evidence of lasting outcomes, that can be scaled up across the country. 📣Real leadership and accountability for the issue of homelessness, and a clear commitment made to work collaboratively from all relevant departments. 🏠A radical approach to social housing that lifts aspirations above party politics and seeks to work together to deliver a new social housing programme in our country. Here at The Passage we've already proven that, with the right solutions, we can truly prevent and end homelessness. Now, let's ask future leaders to do the same. #MakethistheConvo #GeneralElection2024 https://lnkd.in/euvRf8Wc

Policy change can help, yes... but not with a huge price tag. When we say "the government needs to do more," tax payers hear, "the government wants more of my money to give away to irresponsible people." This message creates tension between the policy makers, the organizations, tax payers, and those who need help, and nothing gets accomplished. Most of the outreach efforts for the homeless through the government organizations are through satellite offices. Workers are rude and indifferent to those they were hired to help. Assistance applications are done by computer, phone, or walk-ins. Applicants must remain in contact with the agencies, and provide proofs of every detail of their lives. An unhoused person doesn't have access to most of their necessary documentation, transportation, technology, etc... and gets turned away for services. My point is, these services are not reaching the right target population, and people don't like paying for them. A new strategy is needed. One that incorporates the private business sector.
To truly solve homelessness we need transformative policy change and real system change. Funding more of what we already have will make an impact for sure— and we must fight for all of those resources and policy reforms now. But we cannot stop there or believe that simply doing more of what we’re doing will result in true housing justice.
