Received an email today from a volunteer who’s been with us for a few years now. Last summer, when she was having family discord surrounding her father’s need for Hospice care, she called me and we had a long conversation. Having been a Hospice Volunteer and having seen the wonderful impact on a person’s peace and comfort, she was advocating for hospice for her dad. Her family thought otherwise. “Hospice is a death sentence.” “Hospice overmedicates people to keep them sedated through the dying process.” “Hospice is only for people who have days left.”— have you ever heard these misconceptions? Here’s the truth. Hospice is for comfort. Hospice is pain management and support. Hospice treats pain with limited meds to ensure comfort in transition. Hospice surrounds a family with support in emotional, physical, spiritual, and social ways. Nobody that selects hospice is forced to watch their loved one suffer alone and without support. Most patients live 3-6 months in comfort after their admission to hospice. Some, even longer! This is what my Volunteer knew. This is what I counseled her on. She used this information to advocate for her dad. He passed peacefully in a Hospice House this weekend after a beautiful end-of-life journey. He was comfortable and his spouse was supported through it all. It was a peaceful experience. As a leader in this world, this interaction reminded me, yet again, that misconceptions surrounding the Hospice philosophy are rampant. Education is KEY. Thankful for our army of Hospice and Staff Volunteers that are making a difference with education in this area. Not only within our patient base, but within their own social circles. Building Together: A Solid Foundation for Orphan Care The heart of any successful endeavour lies in a shared understanding. During a recent gathering (caregiver orientation) with the wonderful caregivers from our new church partner, we (Forgotten Voices International) didn't just discuss expectations – we embarked on a collaborative journey. Instead of burdening them with pre-determined goals, we explored together: 👉 What success looks like for our 5-year orphan care ministry partnership. 👉 How each member can contribute their unique talents and perspectives. 👉 Open communication about potential roadblocks and how we can navigate them as a team. By engaging in this dialogue, we fostered a strong foundation built not just on expectations, but on mutual respect, clear communication, and a shared vision. We were reminded of the profound truth: failure or missteps don't have to define us. When we work together, we can learn from them and adapt our approach, ensuring the well-being of the children we serve remains our collective priority. Hospice care remains the most under utilized Medicare benefit. 2024 is the year for a “compassionate collective” of advocacy, education & community engagement. One of the consistent themes hospice clinicians, facility staff members, patients & families repeatedly express is “waiting too long” to give their loved ones the gift of hospice — true comfort & quality of life for the remainder of life. I suggest a 6-3-1 framework which guides & focuses other prevalent questions we ask “why hospice, why now, what matters most.” Curious what a 6-3-1 framework that is? I hope so. Reach out today. My heart wrenched as I watched this video. It was a hard video to watch, especially when Andrew answered the question: Do you want to die at home or in a hospice?" A powerful reminder of hospices' vital work in providing compassionate care during difficult times. I asked myself what was it like for Andrew to make that video. In those first few seconds, you could see a change in his expression as he answered, realising that whatever brought him to St Francis Hospice - who are very good, by the way - his situation was undeniably real. It's a tough place to be. Watching this video made me reflect on how often we are encouraged to be grateful for even the slightest things. While this is a good practice, I invite you to take this further. Consider this: Are you noticing what you are constantly thinking about? Are you replaying past situations, incidents or comments that hurt you? Do you continue to relive it? Because stress is widely recognised as a significant factor contributing to many illnesses. Notice what you are thinking about and ask yourself if those thoughts are serving you to live a happier life. Is it worth it? As morbid as it sounds, the Stoics had a phrase worth remembering: memento mori—remember you will die - as a profound reminder of our mortality and the impermanence of life. I repeat it to myself whenever I notice I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Make the most of your week ahead.
