I believe summer sessions have an impact on student success. But how much impact? On which students? That’s information we don’t have. And it limits our ability to make decisions about special session programming. Well, it’s information we don’t have YET. We congratulate Cory Paynes, whose entry titled "Flower Family", was awarded Best in Show (aesthetic quality) in our twenty-second semi-annual CS 120 All-section Art Show. He is a freshman, studying Computer Science. Artist’s Statement: “I wanted to find the perfect balance between looks and simplicity. I stuck to functions I was pretty familiar with. Adding my signature was a bit challenging; at first i wanted it in the bottom left but found it easier to leave it in the top left. Being voted to be in this art show was rewarding!” Our #CS1 course uses a #MediaComputation approach to help students learn fundamental programming concepts. Each fall and spring one of the projects leads to our CS 120 All-section Art Show. Students from this semester's course recently displayed their work on combining images in our 22nd show. The work displayed was selected by the students in their course section as one of the best in their section. Seven students' work was displayed, and a panel of judges selected the best in the show. As you plan for summer school, remember, this is a highway of opportunity to enrich the lives of students through programming and experiences that the traditional school year doesn’t allow. As a principal, I had the autonomy to plan our summer school programming for two summers and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my career. The community partners I was able to engage and the out of the box experiences our students participated in made ME want to be there. Summer is a great time to market and sell LEARNING to students by making it fun, exciting, and NEW. What’s important for summer 2024? Science of Reading aligned instruction, high dosage tutoring, project-based learning, experiential learning, outdoor classrooms, social emotional learning, community service projects, financial literacy, AI, STEAM!

He is a freshman, studying Computer Science. Artist’s Statement: “Big Ben is a great tall structure and I wanted to see it replace the Eiffel tower because I like it more. Finding the merge function and being ready to call it at the right spot was the hardest. Exposing kids/students to addictive and harmful technologies, even at the youngest ages, in the name of “teaching skills” is clearly a twisted version of media literacy (ML). Our foundation will continue to advocate for ML education that BOTH protects AND empowers children (especially the youngest of them). To that end, the screen-free schools movement is a self-evidently much-needed course correction. It’s beyond the pale to me that so-called ML professionals stand in opposition to such common-sense measures. In fact, our current situation represents an opportunity to practice *actual* media literacy. Teaching students to be critical of addictive media before we expose them to it is just common sense. Movies and TV shows are better without the product placement. ML would be, too. We look forward to finding a ML civic organization looking to try it. Educators can and should stand in solidarity with anyone trying to protect children. Fairplay, for example, is one of our allied organizations (ie, grantees) and we’re proud of what they are doing.

I love experimenting with different procedural approaches. This time, I want to share some of my research on sound generation. In the 1980s, Miller Puckette created a graphical interface for composers, which later evolved into a full-fledged visual programming language. Yes, you guessed it—I'm talking about MaxMSP by Cycling '74. This software is a great tool for learning how to modulate and create sounds and samples. I created two randomized flows using the Heptatonic scale, extracted the MIDI data, and feed it into Ableton with a random ambient key pad. It's a simple yet powerful setup that you can use for samples, meditation, a spa, or whatever you like. 😁 #maxmsp #procedural #soundgeneration #notai
