Friday was the last day of term for many young Londoners - also one of the hottest days of the year. As their peers finished school at lunchtime and headed off into a sunny afternoon, it was inspiring to see so many talented and ambitious young people at their "Graduation" from City, University of London's inaugural Lord Mayor & Liveries' Future Professionals Summer School. Welcomed into the cool and historic The Tallow Chandlers' Company's Hall, we were greatly honoured the Lord Mayor of London Professor Michael Mainelli presided. The Liveries have been working to assure the City of London can access the #talent it needs for #business #practice and the #professions to thrive for, in many cases, hundreds of years. Speaking with the young people at the Summer School, it was access to #professional people, #expert #career #advice and prompts to imagine their futures they valued most. I doubt much has changed! Many brilliant colleagues and inspiring #student ambassadors of City, University of London contributed to launching the Summer School and the support of the City of London Corporation and the Liveries has been invaluable. We hope the resounding #success of the programme will be a platform for further #growth. In the meantime however, please join me in sending the Future Professionals of the Lord Mayor & Liveries Summer School our #congratulations and wishing them every #success. #leadership #university #highereducation #education #socialmobility #apprenticeships #London #engineering #technology #law #finance #supplychain #networking #skills #media #creativeindustries #inclusion #podcasting #journalism #cybersecurity #computerscience #socialcare #health Bayes Business School The City Law School #employability

Think you’ll qualify for in-state tuition by living in one state for a while? 🏠 For most international students, that’s not the case. Out-of-state tuition rates often remain unchanged throughout your studies. 🌍 Plan accordingly to manage your budget, and make the most of your international education journey! #InternationalStudents #StudyAbroad #TuitionTips #CollegeBudget #OutOfState #EducationCosts #StudySmart #MindfulPlanning #UniversityLife #studyinusa #studentid

One of the publications I am most proud of as an individual is one that considers how #highereducation needs to consider how #TitleIX is communicated to #international students. Considering how important #studyabroad and other elements can be for many campuses, the intersection of Title IX policy and student awareness for reporting and inclusion becomes clear. The Journal of International Students has ensured that this is an open educational resource, so I hope it continues to be a piece of research that invites conversation and enables future study. https://lnkd.in/ewZzcVGe

I love this. As 🧠Pasha Marlowe, MFT had pointed out; there are so many different versions and iterations of these that could be made. My question to you: how are you looking to decrease the inequity between these states? In your personal and professional life? What do you believe to be essential in combatting these systematic and institutionalised belief structures? Is having people in positions power through privilege, just simply* acknowledge it, enough? It is a considerable task, whichever way we look at it. However, we do need to be brave enough to make that first important step.
Fantastic presentation to our first year degree apprentice SLT students by Kate B.. Sharing this model (Academic Wheel of Privilege, UK Research Intergrity Office, 2023,https://lnkd.in/ei6XWGSw) for you to ponder (the closer you are to the centre of the circle, the more power you likely hold in existing power structures in UK culture):

Interesting how Northern Ireland students experience life in the Republic of Ireland and meet scepticism about whether or not they are Irish . https://lnkd.in/ehB72wGX There has long been a disconnect between the way Irish identity is constructed in the two jurisdictions on the island. This takes place through a pervasive and totalising ‘we’ in the South, and through a more assertive chosen ‘I’ in the North; the national ‘we’ incorporates everything in the South, while national identity in the North is often distinguished from religion, locality and politics; being Irish is a form of situatedness in the South, being Irish (or British) can be more an individual choice in the North. This makes for different grammars of nationality in each jurisdiction and constant senses of inappropriateness on both sides. See https://lnkd.in/ecvQeFmp. Orla Muldoon’s studies in the 2000s showed that Southerners perceived Northerners as overly assertive in their Irish identity – so much so as not to be really Irish! Has this changed in the last decade? It’s good to see this study with students. There are hints here of the new international discourse of identity politics and chosen identifications, but this also overlays historically-deeper discursive disjunctures. Some skilful disentangling of meanings is necessary. A simple recognition of minority self-definitions is not enough for these issues of Irish identity touch on cultural and evaluative assumptions, and state practices in each jurisdiction: recognition has to be plural, reciprocal and negotiated. If this can be done, it reconstructs the culture of both states, and of the island, in a more open way. Deliberation is the way forward. My recent focus group research with Dawn Walsh and Joanne McEvoy found that students were very well able to correct each other’s misconceptions and elucidate some of the contrasts and similarities in the grammars North and South. More systematic deliberation – not to make decisions but to articulate perceptions and reach shared understandings – can show the layers of meaning involved.
