What comes after the #NumbersNovember? Right, now it's time for the #DeepDiveDecember. This month we would like to present you facts and figures about the start-up scene for agricultural technology in Africa. We quote an article from "Further Africa" which states how "investment in agri-tech startups in Africa will power agriculture": 📌 Agriculture generates an estimated 35% of Africa's GDP and provides livelihoods for 50% of the population. According to a recent FAO report entitled "Estimating Global and Country Level Employment in Agri-food Systems", the food and agriculture sector employs an estimated 290 million Africans, making it a key driver of economic growth. With 790 million people employed in the agri-food sector, Africa is second only to Asia. The continent is agro-ecologically and climatically diverse, ranging from dry savannahs to tropical rainforests. This diversity offers great opportunities, but at the same time requires regionally adapted solutions. 📌 A World Bank report from 2022 shows that the African agricultural economy has the fastest growth of all continents, with growth of 4.1 per cent in the period 2000-2020 compared to global growth of 2.7 per cent. 📌 Furthermore, a McKinsey report reveals the dire need for digital technologies, especially for smallholder farmers who account for 60% of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa. Start-ups across the food supply chain have built a vibrant agrifoodtech ecosystem in Africa over the last decade. According to AgFunderNews, since 2013, investors have poured $1.76 billion into the continent’s agrifood startups, with numbers increasing at a steady pace for much of that time (AgFunder’s new Africa AgriFoodTech Investment Report). #DeepDiveDecember #KAAIA2023 #SDG2 #ZeroHunger #Innovation #Africa #KofiAnnanAward #agritech #SocialEntrepreneurship

🟩 Interested in #agribusiness #publicprivatepartnerships and in agribusiness #entrepreneurship #incubation and #acceleration? Here are two great new FAO and African Union publications for you: 1️⃣"The first publication, "Agribusiness Incubation and Acceleration Landscape in Africa" is an in-depth analysis and mapping of over 430 enterprise support organizations across the continent, aiming to fill the gap in publicly available information on agribusiness incubation and acceleration programmes and their impacts. The publication is based on a study commissioned by FAO and the AU. It reveals that while significant growth in agribusiness incubation in Africa has been noted since 2010, the ecosystem remains underdeveloped, particularly in West and Central Africa. Download it here ⏯️ in English: https://lnkd.in/ehznDjJK (...) 2️⃣ The second publication, "Guide for the Design and Implementation of Public-Private Partnerships for Agribusiness Development in Africa", aims to support African countries in crafting sustainable and inclusive public-private partnerships (PPPs) for agribusiness development. It draws on lessons learned from across Africa. “This guide is intended to be a practical tool for policymakers interested in promoting agri-PPPs as part of their overall agricultural transformation strategies,” Josefa Sacko and Abebe Haile-Gabriel said in their joint foreword to the report."
