Attending ALROC further solidified my desire to increase my awareness of economic, cultural, and geopolitical issues as they relate to China 🇨🇳 and the impact that the rise of China is having on the global environment—especially the USA 🇺🇸! Attached are a number of books I’ve enjoyed listening to via the Audible app. Some of these books provide a chilling visual of China’s rapid rise within the global economic arena and its aggressive actions of overturning the current Rules-Based International Order (RBIO). Others provide a fictional account of what the next war could look like with the inclusion of artificial intelligence, machine learning technology, autonomous systems, electromagnetic pulse, tactical & strategic nuclear weapons and much much more. If you aren’t already engaged, I challenge everyone to take a more meaningful approach at enhancing your awareness of global affairs and how they have been and are currently being shaped. This is not only a military or government problem. This is a complex “whole of society” issue that affects us all in some way or form, even if we don’t realize it. As a nation, I believe we are at the crossroads. A lot of precious time, lives and treasure has been expended against non near-peer adversaries while our near-peer adversaries studied our tactics and modernized their forces. This is much more than the banning of a Chinese-owned app, it’s about the ability of our country to thrive as it has since WWII and remain a beacon of freedom in the world for future generations.

Split-second decisions can be the difference between life and death when facing an impending disaster, so Nalini Venkatasubramanian wants to help people make informed choices. The computer science professor and her colleagues in the UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, including Sharad Mehrotra, have partnered with Tohoku University in Japan to better analyze the impact of natural disasters on humans to outline real-time pathways to safety. The three-year partnership between UC Irvine and Japanese researchers, funded by a $1 million grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), involves designing tools to create Disaster Digital Twin cities that are representative of Sendai in Japan and Southern California.
