MYTHS AND TRUTHS There are many myths and misconceptions about domestic abuse that can prevent victims from seeking help or receiving the support they need. Here are some common myths and the corresponding truths about domestic abuse: Myth: Alcohol and drugs are to blame Truth: Although many abusers also abuse alcohol and/or drugs, this is not the underlying cause of the abuse. If alcohol and drugs caused abuse then everyone who drinks alcohol and used drugs would be violent and abusive and this is not the case. Intoxication is however an aggravating factor, it may make existing abuse worse, or be a catalyst for an attack, but it does not cause or excuse domestic abuse. https://buff.ly/3IWxPyl #ldass #endingdomesticabusenow

Now that the country has elected a new Government, we look forward to working with all MPs to make sure ending alcohol harm is a priority. We need lasting policies which protect our health and fix a system which is not adequately addressing the numerous and diverse harms alcohol causes our society. But change is possible! Here's a reminder of what we’d like to see: ✔️Create an environment which prevents alcohol harm ✔️End stigma and recognise the complexity of alcohol harm ✔️Ensure everyone can access support and treatment You can read our full manifesto asks here: https://lnkd.in/eVWS4Ewj #EndAlcoholHarm #AlcoholAwarenessWeek

It's been a very busy week already and we're only halfway through! Thanks to Upfront with Katie Hannon for providing a really important opportunity to address some of the misconceptions about the detrimental and disruptive impact that prison has on people, particularly those who are imprisoned on short sentences of 12 months or less for low level offences. We know that people experiencing mental health and/or addiction issues will not get the support they need in prison given the severe overcrowding crisis and overstretched services already in high demand. If we truly want to reduce crime and prevent reoffending then we need to accept that prison is not a deterrent. If it was then we wouldn't be talking about the revolving door of prison. I was heartened that all of the panel members talked about the need to deal with the underlying causes of offending behaviour. However, I wouldn't agree with all of the "solutions" proposed. Unless the focus is shifted to focus on preventative measures and also alternatives to prison with necessary rehabilitative supports in place, we won't see effective and meaningful change resulting in safer communities. Interestingly, public officials from right across the criminal justice sector - who formed the Prison Overcrowding Response Group - have put forward some sensible solutions to address prison overcrowding including reviewing the Drugs Treatments Court and expanding eligibility, a recommendation that was particularly relevant in the context of this discussion. And finally a big shout out to Dr Ian Marder who provided a reasoned and evidence-informed argument on the night against a zero tolerance approach to policing.
Last night, in a conversation about drug use on RTE's Upfront with Katie Hannon show, Irish Penal Reform Trust Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, responded to the panel discussion. Prison will not work to address many underlying causes of offending behaviour, including addiction. We need to invest in alternatives that are proven to work and ultimately result in less crime. 👁️ Watch the clip of Saoirse's contributions on X (formerly Twitter): https://lnkd.in/eK64swxM 📺 Watch the full segment, including Dr Ian Marder, Jim O'Callaghan TD, TD Gary Gannon and Ciara Kelly on RTÉ player: https://lnkd.in/e9E9isAa #RTEUpfront
