𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞. #SpaceTech is absolutely one of the hottest markets out there right now. The cost of launch is 10x lower than it was a decade ago, making space more accessible for all. We are in a new #SpaceRace, and space is capturing the public imagination in the most profound way since the 1960s. It’s a seriously cool time to engage with this space (pardon the pun). Technological leaps and a shifting corporate landscape are fuelling unprecedented innovation in timescales that would previously have been unimaginable. Multiple private organisations are competing with bold visions to transform how we interact with and utilise space – from #ReusableRockets and #SpaceTourism to #SpaceExploration the #Colonisation of new worlds. In short, the global space industry is on the brink of a major expansion, potentially growing its revenue to over $1 trillion by 2040. It is telling that Interest from the #VC world is at an all time high, and despite the sluggish investment landscape of 2023, Spacetech was an anomaly, bringing in $12.5 billion in investment. Key VC focus is on the following areas: 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 – rockets that can be reused, massively reducing the cost to get into space. An absolute gamechanger. 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 – space exploration for non-astronauts at a fraction of the cost (and risk) of conventional space voyages. 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 – transforming the global landscape of communication and data. 𝐈𝐧-𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 – components made in space, reducing the reliance on complex and complex supply missions from earth. Simply put, Spacetech is changing the entire game. If we are entering a future with access to space being routine and inexpensive, what potential does that unlock? Ultimately, what we are seeing today would have been unimaginable in the recent past. Tuesday shortly after midnight I'll be with a small group of entrepreneurs, technologists and artists at the Kennedy Space Center to watch the launch of a Falcon 9 with a payload destined for the moon. Why? There is something amazing going up on this rocket, a payload of art, which will form the first art gallery on the moon. There is also a robotic lander with a package critical to the success of the Artemis project, but the art is especially exciting and I want to celebrate the artists and entrepreneurs that made that payload possible. I'll cheer them at the launch. Were you at OODAcon last October? If so you no doubt recall that incredible panel we had that featured Ryan Westerdahl and S. Sita Sonty which helped us wrestle with topics related to the new space economy. (A link to a summary of their panel is below). This launch of art into space underscores for me how prescient Ryan and Sita were in their panel. They hit on the need to continue to spread the word on the importance of space, beyond the companies with a direct role. Individuals and all companies should understand the benefits of space to them. And their conversation also pointed to new growth areas in the space domain including the importance of art in space and the potential of luxury goods produced in or improved by space. They are right. We need to spread excitement about space to others, and art and luxury goods in and influenced by space are a growth area. And in my view the launch of this art to the moon and the plans to spread more of this art project around on earth can help spread the excitement and speed the growth of new space awareness and growth of space related businesses.
