🌍 Celebrating Cultures & Interconnectedness Through Design 🌍 Yennayer & Pongal - The Amazigh collection Did you know that “Amazigh” (plural: Imazighen) means “free people” in the Tamazight language and refers to the indigenous people of North Africa? While outsiders often use the term "Berber," it’s incorrect and carries negative connotations—derived from the word barbarian. Let’s embrace and celebrate the proper term: Amazigh! At Ihsan Ishan Design, in addition to being a design studio that provides services to clients—we also create our own product lines. These products reflect our passion for celebrating global cultures, travels, and interconnectedness. A big part of our collections is inspired by the beauty of diverse heritages and the unique stories they tell. Our Amazigh-inspired collection draws from my journey to Morocco, where I found a deep connection between Amazigh culture and my Indian (Tamil) roots. Both share rich traditions, languages, and a profound sense of identity. The “Tamazight” language, written in the ancient “Tifinagh” script, is one of the world’s oldest—just like Tamil! This connection is also reflected in Yennayer (Jan 12), the Amazigh New Year, celebrated just days before Pongal (Jan 14), the Tamil harvest festival. "Ethereal" 2025 Design Francesco Cappuccio "Ethereal" is a collection of lightweight, sustainable lighting installations inspired by orchids petals, crafted from aluminum profiles and rattan meshes. The powder-coated finish provides durability and is compatible with aluminum recycling processes. Designed for the different areas of Southeast Asian hotels , these cost-effective sculptures enhance architectural spaces with dynamic forms, blending aesthetic elegance with environmental responsibility. In Thai culture, orchids hold deep significance, symbolizing beauty, love, and strength. They are often associated with luxury and refinement, due to their delicate and exotic appearance. Orchids are frequently given as gifts to express admiration or respect, and they play a role in religious offerings and ceremonies. In addition to their aesthetic and spiritual value, orchids in Thailand are a symbol of prosperity, with some varieties even representing good fortune. Their cultural importance reflects Thailand's deep connection with nature and tradition. P.S. These light sculptures are not created by AI, but rather with its assistance. AI contributes to aspects such as photorealistic representation, design variations, and video animations. They are currently in production, with the first in the series "Harvest" scheduled for installation this month in Phnom Penh. 🌉 China’s Nail-Free Wooden Bridges Added to UNESCO Heritage List 🇨🇳 China’s ancient technique for building wooden arch bridges—without nails or rivets—has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. 🔎 Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Unique Craftsmanship: This ancient method employs a sophisticated understanding of “beam-weaving,” mortise and tenon joints, and environmental considerations. It allows woodworkers to construct durable bridges using just 15 chopsticks to support over 1 kg of weight. This skill has been passed down through generations, exemplified by artisans like Hu Junfeng, who has dedicated over 40 years to preserving this craft. 2️⃣ Cultural Significance: These wooden arch bridges serve as vital community hubs for gatherings and celebrations, reinforcing their cultural importance. Let's get personal! That's one of the critical learning for me: It is the personal commitment which make impossible things to be possible. Keep striving for creativity and never settle. This is where we as human being still makes the difference, not AI. And it's personal engagement to get the team and supporting collaborators to be aligned towards the same goal. Not something we easily see from conventional corporate structures. These are being demonstrated in so many incredible brilliant works being designed by highly respected designer Eleftheria Deko. Both arc magazine issue 142 article and #Grdmagzine 12th Issue in 2024 are worth the reading.
