🌞 Article Sharing: Optimization of Natural Lighting Level in Umah Pitu Ruang in Gayo Highland, Indonesia 🌞 Traditional houses are invaluable cultural assets, but many, like the Umah Pitu Ruang (UPR) in the Gayo Highland, Indonesia, face challenges in adapting to modern living standards. A project to boost tourism and economic development. The design process of a massive project summarized in 90 second.

In Nose, Toyono District, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, an adaptive-reuse historic-preservation mixed-use project, combines a residence, bookstore, and restaurant into a singular cohesive envelope. An open floor plan, allows for an abundance of natural sunlight to cascade across the interior spaces. Gardens and verandas outside the property, allow for beautiful views of the northern satoyama region, and a feeling of connection and serenity with the natural environment. A significant part of the project was built by the owner with the help of local residents. Earthen walls, which are a major part of the structural elements of the building, were made of recycled material from part of the former building that was demolished. The recycled material, was combined with rice straw and fermented to give it structure. Locally sourced timber is used throughout the interiors of the project giving it a more natural element to its interior spaces. This project is a culturally important example of ways in which we can sustainably build without the need of transporting materials across vast distances increasing carbon unnecessarily.
