Immigration is already a major polarizing issue in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. UO's Philip H. Knight Chair of Social Science and Political Science Professor Dan Tichenor is a scholar of immigration and refugee policy. In this article he presents four key reasons why meaningful immigration policy change has been so difficult to achieve – and why it remains a pipe dream. The discussion around immigration, housing demand, and unemployment often becomes a recurring topic, especially during elections or when issues arise. Migrants, who fill essential roles in industries like healthcare and agriculture, are frequently seen as contributing to rising housing prices and unemployment. But is immigration really the issue? Instead of falling into the same blame game, we should focus on innovating housing solutions and expanding opportunities for everyone in our growing workforce. It’s time, in fact, “overdue” to break the cycle and rethink the narrative. #Migration #Inequality #Inclusion

He didn't contribute to the housing crisis. Simply put a lack of planning for decades means we can not sustain migrants skilled or otherwise which makes migrants the quick solution to an extended lack of planning feature and reality. In truth it isn't just housing its infrastructure like schools, hospitals and roads even. Housing is just the simplistic way of viewing the lack of planning.Attacking migrants is the crisis quick fix to a long term lack of planning. Lets be clear. Universities don't sell education. They sell colonial acceptance for those who need that ticket to either migrate or integrate into the global system. Its racism they are marketing. We don't accept foreign skills because we cant diminish our education platform when in many cases foreign skills are more than satisfactory. So we bring in skilled migrants and then ignore their skills. The only thing they want when they come here for education is a ticket to the western world, the language , the culture not our so called superior education. That or a back door to migrate. The universities are basically the new boats. Peddling over priced crap most of the time they are no better than the boat scalpers. They are buying a life, acceptance not education.

TAKE ACTION: HIAS needs you to tell the Senate that it's asylum seekers *and* humanitarian aid! The Senate last night released language for a bill that pits humanitarian aid against several critical ways to seek asylum. This proposal prevents most people from accessing their legal right to seek asylum in the following ways: - Capping the number of people allowed to ask for asylum and shutting down the border to everyone else - Heightening screening standards for asylum seekers to ensure few will meet them - Denying people the right to appeal their decision, even after not having legal representation We need serious comprehensive immigration reform, not politicizing a critical human - and legal! - right established in the wake of the Holocaust. HIAS' full statement explaining our position will be shared in the comments. #asylum #asylumseekers #refugeeswelcome #immigration #immigrationreform #humanitarianaid #bordersecurity https://lnkd.in/gF4zXJjg

Just my opinion but honestly- Build more houses, that’s how we end the housing shortage. Start working on government policy that reduces the cost of living and allows more people to invest in property development. Offer better incentives to investors willing to build houses. Reduce interest rates so the banks can approve more mortgage applications. Offer cheaper landlord insurance so they can confidently rent out their investment properties. Maybe try to attract more international investors? Offer incentives to the mines to build more houses for their employees- it would all add to the housing infrastructure that the country needs to accommodate its population. There are strategies to address the current situation, shouldn’t that be the focus of government rather than making excuses for what is essentially bad population planning of the past?? Is it naive to suggest our leaders focus on ‘the fix’ rather than the blame game? 🧐🤦♀️

Solving the Invisible Formulas of Consumer Behavior | Unveiling the Rationality Behind the Irrational.
Migrants Are Not the Problem—It's Just Easier to Blame Them Since I arrived in Australia in 2015, I’ve noticed that whenever issues arise, migrants are often blamed. Lately, the housing crisis has become the latest example. Migrants are accused of causing housing shortages and driving up prices. But in truth, it's just easier to point fingers at people who can't vote and can't influence the politics. As a migrant myself, I find it cheap and irresponsible to blame us for issues we didn't create. Migrants make meaningful contributions to Australia, yet we are often scapegoated because it’s politically convenient. It's time we focus on real solutions instead of empty blame games. We must reduce bureaucracy, simplify legislation, and invest in developing regional areas to spread population growth. Stronger eviction controls, relaxed zoning laws, and more medium-density housing could address the root of the housing crisis. Blaming migrants won't solve anything. Real change comes from addressing the actual problems.

In my most recently published essay at thelehrhaus.com, I focus the lens of traditional Jewish texts on one of the great moral problems that has emerged from the tragic war in Israel and Gaza. https://lnkd.in/gGxr-NSN In my most recently published essay at Northeast Public Radio, I explore what we should/mean when we use the phrase "welcome to America." In light of the deepening immigrant and refugee crisis on America's southern border, strengthening our commitments to immigration law reform and creating a rational and compassionate national consensus around immigration is more critical than ever. https://lnkd.in/g9J2pTNY
