BERGER MONTAGUE NAMED AS... Litigators of the Week: $284M and Counting From Elite Universities Accused of Price-Fixing.    Our Litigators of the Week are Bob Gilbert of Gilbert Litigators & Counselors, Ted Normand of Freedman Normand Friedland, and Eric Cramer of Berger Montague who have been pursuing price-fixing claims against 17 elite universities accused of conspiring to limit financial aid awards and inflating tuition.    Last week U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly in Chicago gave preliminary approval to three more settlements—with Dartmouth agreeing to pay $33.75 million, Northwestern $43.5 million, and Vanderbilt $55 million. Those settlements raise the number of schools that have settled to 10 and the total amount of the settlements to $284 million.

For equity's sake: fix CA's school facility program. Important work from University of California, Berkeley Center for Cities + Schools & Jeff Vincent highlighting the success of the #LCFF in promoting educational equity, and the lack of an equitable approach to funding for school facilities. Without one, "the promise of educational equity will remain unfulfilled." https://lnkd.in/grYWTrpX When analyzing the 2018-19 School Accountability Report Card (SARC) data collected by each school district, the Public Policy Institute of California found that 38% of California students went to schools that do not meet minimum facility standards; 25% attended schools with damaged floors, walls, or ceilings; and 14% went to schools with malfunctioning electrical systems. 15% of students attended schools that had at least one extreme deficiency, with underlying issues like gas leaks, power failures, and structural damage. Another analysis by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and UC Davis in 2020 found that only 15% of classrooms had healthy indoor air ventilation. Iowa Ready ensures a direct cost equal to or less than $21,060 for Iowa students attending college for the first time, which is the average 2023-24 direct cost of Iowa’s three state universities. https://lnkd.in/gEFwEuHd
