The BEGIN Lab traveled to Munich, Germany last week to attend the International AIDS Society 2024 Conference! We treasured this time to connect with partners and colleagues old and new, and to learn, brainstorm, and get energized about the future of HIV research. See below for pictures with our Indlela Project HE2RO partners, and BEGIN lab co-director Alison Buttenheim speaking at the satellite session "Voices Unveiled: Using a Behavioural Science Community Panel to Fine-Tune Our Care, Harness AI, and Combat Misinformation in the HIV Response."

Groundbreaking HIV research! Scientists have used the Nobel Prize-winning gene-editing tool to remove HIV DNA from infected cells, marking a significant step towards a potential cure. The Amsterdam UMC team’s strategy focuses on parts of the virus consistent across all known strains, aiming for a broad-spectrum therapy. While still in the proof-of-concept stage, the research paves the way for optimizing delivery methods to target HIV reservoir cells, with clinical trials as the next milestone. The researchers emphasize that, despite promising results, it’s too early to declare a functional HIV cure. However, the findings fuel hope for future treatments. The beauty of multidisciplinary research ignites when combined with #ArtificialIntelligence. #UFEPI member Dr. Ruogu Fang and UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Ph.D. student Chaoyue Sun collaborate with other researchers at the institute to forecast #HIV infections based on individuals' contact networks. Improving the diagnosis of HIV is a fundamental objective of the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative because it can lead to transmission reduction. With this research, the team aims to provide #healthcare practitioners and policymakers insights to help combat HIV and potentially other viruses and diseases. We are proud that LVEMs keep helping more and more scientists to leave the queue in front of a big TEM and get their results immediately, directly in their labs. It's a win-win strategy: the top-end devices in the shared labs can focus on top-end tasks, then, and every team can move faster in their research. In many cases, such as this one, it can mean not only earlier discoveries but also a significant change in people's lives. #enjoyLVEM #electronmicroscopy #HIVResearch
Congratulations to Robert Dick and his lab at Emory University on the installation of their new LVEM 25E! 🎉 The LVEM 25E will serve as an in-lab solution for negative stain imaging of the HIV virus, significantly increasing throughput by reducing the lab's dependency on the Emory TEM shared core facility. This compact and powerful microscope will enable rapid screening of viral samples, determining their suitability for future cryo-TEM studies. We are excited to see the advancements in HIV research facilitated by this installation. Welcome to the Delong Instruments family, Rob and team! #NewInstall #DelongAmerica #DelongInstruments #ElectronMicroscopy #HIVResearch

It has been 40+ years since the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and it's not fully understood how HIV enters and replicates in human cells, which has hindered the development of treatments. New research, led by Professor Mark Williams, is working on a solution. Read more using at: https://bit.ly/4buFteW.

In this study of 15,710 HIV-infected individuals, with 85% men and 15% women, we see a concerning gender imbalance that reflects societal biases. The average patient age was 35.3. Our meta-analysis found that 60.94% had HCV co-infections in Iran. Despite a small reduction over the years, it remains statistically insignificant. This highlights the urgent need to change societal attitudes and focus on addressing this issue.
I am thrilled to share our latest groundbreaking research on the "Prevalence of HCV among patients with HIV in Iran: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis." Our team has meticulously conducted a comprehensive analysis, delving into the intricate intersection of HIV and HCV prevalence among patients in Iran. https://lnkd.in/gpj-g_CW

As the new year began, we asked HHS leaders and others to reflect on the progress achieved by the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative and to look ahead to what 2024 will bring. Here's what NIH's Dr. Carl Dieffenbach had to say: “Under EHE, NIH supports research to identify and address barriers to uptake of HIV testing, prevention and treatment services, with a goal of enabling equitable health outcomes in the communities most affected by HIV today. A key strength of this work is our strong collaborations between academic researchers, implementing partners, and community members, which result in locally led design and implementation of interventions that are practical, evidence-based, and desired by those who stand to benefit most from them. We will continue to share key findings with our federal partners so that EHE keeps growing even more inclusive, effective, and sustainable.” #EndHIVepidemic

Pharmacists play many roles in the management of HIV, thus it is essential they remain up to date as the HIV field continues to advance and patients grow more complex. This activity discusses strategies for rapid antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, the role of long-acting injectable (LAI) ART, the interpretation of resistance testing, and the decision-making processes involved in designing active ART regimens for heavily treatment-experienced (HTE) patients with HIV. How does "one d and done" in dPCR look like when you put it into practice? In this recent study ⬇, see how researchers transferred from ddPCR to nanoplate dPCR for HIV transcription profiling and obtained precise data with shorter time to results and higher multiplexing capabilities. Explore their findings that a considerable proportion of HIV transcripts likely originate from defective proviruses, with potential impact on curative strategies. ✅ https://lnkd.in/esgQgseW #digitalPCR #dPCR #HIVresearch
