Nearly 6 years ago, I set out to identify #legaltech that could solve a unique, highly complex contract review and workflow challenge in a business I was leading. Few companies with the right level of sophistication existed back then. Only one could solve it to the required degree of accuracy and precision I was looking for: ThoughtRiver. Over the next few years, I had the pleasure of working closely with ThoughtRiver’s passionate, service-oriented team as they transformed early-days LLMs into sophisticated workflows that made contract review faster, more efficient, and data-rich. I’m delighted to share that I’m taking the next step in this journey with them: I’ve joined the wonderful team to lead the company as Chief Executive, and will continue to serve as Board Chair. ThoughtRiver began the AI journey nearly 9 years ago – the brainchild of founder & CEO Tim Pullan, who aspired to make contract review so fast that it could literally happen while sipping cocktails. (Perhaps the business plan literally was written on a bar napkin?!). Tim, what you have built is amazing – from the product to the impact on lawyer (and non-lawyer) productivity to the team to the culture. I am honored to be part of it, and I am excited to be working with the entire team. For me, this idea isn't just theoretical (or new); it's the very foundation of our work at #FreshfieldsLab. but its good to have a word for that now. Here, lawyers, developers, tech experts, data analysts, and machine learning specialists converge, embodying the supermind concept. Our collective brainpower has birthed unique solutions that fill gaps in the market, solutions that were once thought to be beyond reach, or we just did not find in the market. I firmly believe that the creation of more 'superminds'—collaborative networks of diverse expertise—is not just beneficial; it's essential. Relying solely on external legal tech companies or expecting in-house lawyers to single-handedly navigate the complexities of modern legal challenges limits our potential for groundbreaking solutions. Superminds, by contrast, harness the collective intelligence and specialized skills of lawyers, tech experts, data scientists, and machine learning specialists, creating a synergy that transcends the capabilities of any individual or isolated group. This collaborative approach not only accelerates the pace of innovation but also ensures that the solutions are comprehensive, deeply integrated, and truly responsive to the nuanced needs of the legal profession.
