Protecting natural capital in the Pacific islands requires a comprehensive, sustainable, life cycle approach to asset design, selection and management. Infrastructure like sewage treatment is expensive and it plays a critical role in protecting the environment so let’s look at some of the concerns and how the Hydroflux Group addresses them when it comes to decentralised solutions. Robust and resilient design is a must because the Pacific is a challenging physical environment often battered by weather events on an increasing basis. Operational capability needs to be considered to balance off against the available talent and in the case of sewage treatment, the system must be able to protect the ecosystem it discharges into. Panaqua, based in British Columbia, Canada, excels in providing advanced portable water filtration solutions. Their dedication to clean water is truly commendable. www.panaqua.ca PWTech, founded in 2019 in Brazil, offers an innovative approach to delivering potable water to remote regions. Their technology is low-cost, portable, easy to install, and utilizes alternative energy sources like solar power. PWTech prioritizes needy communities but also serves sectors like construction, agribusiness, and others. SA Water desalination plant now operational   South Australia Water’s new desalination plant in Marla is now open and operational, marking the first time the rural town has had access to clean drinking water straight from its taps. Located in the state’s Far North, Marla’s water supply has historically been designated as non-drinking, with residents sourcing their own drinking water from private rainwater tanks, water carting or bottled products.    Following extensive planning, construction and testing, the town’s small-scale desalination plant is now producing drinking-quality supply for locals to use in their kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and gardens. Here's how you can proceed: Feasibility Study and Planning:Conduct a feasibility study to assess the viability of integrating existing sewage pipelines into a centralized system. Identify the locations where new larger diameter pipelines are needed and determine the optimal routes.Consider factors such as population density, existing infrastructure, and environmental impacts. Micro Tunneling or Tunneling Technique:Choose between micro tunneling and traditional tunneling techniques based on factors like soil conditions, depth, and the presence of obstacles. Traditional tunneling involves excavating a tunnel and installing pipelines within it. This method is typically used for deeper and larger projects. Pipeline Design:Design the larger diameter pipelines to accommodate the combined flow of untreated sewage from various sources. The design should consider the expected volume and hydraulic requirements. Construction and Installation:Construct the new larger diameter pipelines using the chosen tunneling technique. Micro tunneling involves minimal surface disruption and is suitable for urban areas. Conduct regular inspections and quality checks during construction. Centralized Sewage Treatment Plant (STP):Build or upgrade a centralized STP to handle the combined sewage flow efficiently.Incorporate advanced treatment processes in the STP to ensure effective sewage treatment. Effluent Disposal or Reuse:Determine the best method for disposing of or reusing the treated sewage effluent, following the centralized treatment. Regulatory Compliance:Ensure that the integrated system complies with all relevant environmental laws and regulations, including permits and approvals. Preferred proponent selected for the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant WA Water Minister Simone McGurk has unveiled the preferred consortium for the design, construction, and operation of the upcoming Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant (ASDP). The chosen entities, Acciona Agua Australia Pty Ltd and Jacobs Group Australia Pty Ltd, are set to join forces as the Northern Water Partnership (NWP), pending further negotiations. The collaborative effort is slated to commence construction in mid-2024. Acciona Agua Australia, recognised for its extensive track record in delivering and managing drinking water infrastructure, notably as part of a consortium overseeing the Adelaide Seawater Desalination Plant, will bring valuable expertise to the project. Similarly, Jacobs Group Australia, with its established partnership with Water Corporation on critical water supply and wastewater initiatives throughout Western Australia, adds a wealth of experience to the endeavor. The ASDP, projected to yield 100 billion litres of climate-resilient drinking water annually, is poised to bolster the water supply for over 2.5 million residents in Western Australia. This ambitious $2.8 billion program is made feasible through the State Government's Budget surplus.
