This raises the question of why there aren’t 1,000 fathers supporting Empower Academy alongside me, and honestly, I can’t answer that. As a parent, hearing this fills me with anxiety, anger, and sadness. I refuse to let my daughter become a victim. We invest in driver’s education, tutors, and test prep courses—are we serious? I’m sure this young 17-year-old did all of these things. If they could do it over again, they would likely prioritize preparing her for the monsters waiting for her at college. This week, we're kicking off our first units—selected by the learners themselves! Each class participated in a paper ballot vote, choosing from a list they helped create. One class opted to immediately start with the unit that received the most votes, while the others engaged in a deeper discussion, using the results to plan and prioritize future units based on their specific learning needs. Choosing units this way reduces peer pressure and ensures that students can vote anonymously if they wish, fostering a judgment-free environment. This approach encourages more genuine input and helps everyone feel comfortable expressing their preferences. Everyone will celebrate your wins… …but a true community will support you through the lows. We see this at KaiPod Learning all the time because starting a microschool can feel like a lonely journey in the beginning. It’s a tough, often isolating decision that requires deep conviction and a strong belief in the positive impact going a different educational route will have on the community. From our very first cohort, it became clear that Founders needed a place to share their highs and, just as importantly, commiserate over their lows. That’s why we created an online community where Founders at every stage can connect with others facing similar challenges. We’ve also built in strategies to make it easier to share both the good and the bad. For instance, our “Wednesday Woes” are where we share struggles with complete honesty and vulnerability. And on Fridays, we celebrate “Friday Wins” - those small victories that are so much sweeter when shared with people who get it. These little instances of vulnerability form the basis of a community - something so many independent educators miss when striking out on their own. No matter your industry, though, this support system is crucial. Sometimes all your team needs is just the knowledge that, despite the challenges, it’s going to be ok. And who better to tell them than those who are on the same journey?
