This is a topic that is frequently discussed--what is the most effective use of time for learning during onboarding? What should be included and what should be learned later? I especially appreciate the idea of eliminating “insider terminology” to avoid creating “outsider” anxiety mentioned in the article. Speaking a common language to avoid confusion is always a goal of project managers.

An effective onboarding process is incredibly important. According to recent insights from Harvard Business Review, successful onboarding can result in increased productivity, employee engagement, and retention. Despite this, around one-third of new employees quit within 90 days. How can you ensure that new employees have a seamless onboarding experience? The article lists three steps employers can take: 1️⃣ Give employees information in (logical) increments: Don’t overwhelm new employees with an abundance of information, but space it out over a longer period of time. By dividing new information into logical chunks, you’ll actually help new employees learn faster than providing it all at once. 2️⃣ Set clear expectations Make sure to provide sufficient guidance to new hires. Help them understand how to prioritize tasks, what they are and aren’t responsible for, and who to go for if they need additional information. 3️⃣ Eliminate “insider terminology” According to Bob Sutton and Hayagreeva Rao in their book “The Friction Project,” one of the primary sources of organizational friction is “jargon monoxide.” Excessive use of insider jargon can confuse new hires, hindering their ability to connect and feel a sense of belonging. (Read the full HBR article here: https://lnkd.in/dcY4GTbd) Ultimately, it’s important to ensure that your new hires feel included and comfortable going to others for help.
