In OT school, when we were being trained in our specialties and learning at different depths all of the body systems, we were always told to throw away the fascia – the thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place. Now we know that the fascia, as proven in medical research, can actually be a source of pain. It may even be THE source of pain for patients and OT clients, depending on their unique cases. And it doesn’t stop at pain. The role of fascia in the body is much more vast than pain management. It’s also about the overall function of the body. When the fascia is healthy, the entire body and all the systems within it will function optimally. Every OTP should have an understanding of fascia's role in the body. Enroll in our free introductory course led by industry recognized occupational therapist, educator and speaker, Amy Mayer. https://lnkd.in/ga9-qsRJ #occupationaltherapy #OTP #fasciawellness #continuingeducation

I recently had the privilege of developing a new course at UBC in the MOT program on Care Planning and Functional Assessments in areas of public and private OT practice across the lifespan. Here’s the biggest takeaway: No matter the practice area, approach matters. Why? From #PersonalInjury, to emerging areas of practice for OTs in Canada including #EstatePlanning and #FamilyLaw, Care Planning Assessments inform and quantify client-specific needs and costs to facilitate recovery from a health condition or for maintenance of function & quality of life. These assessments are often at the end of the continuum of care. This means that an occupational therapist is often the last encounter a client will have in their legal case or discharge from a hospital/rehab. At this stage, the words and actions we choose can have an even bigger and lasting impact on our clients and their recovery. This is why I emphasize the importance of leading these assessments with compassion with my OT students - more specifically, the 3 C’s: ⭐ Culturally Sensitive ⭐ Collaborative ⭐ Comprehensive Thank you to the The University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Program for supporting my vision with this new course. An even bigger thank you to my son, who enthusiastically helped ensure every sentence and image in the presentation was perfectly aligned. It is often the excitement that comes with the process of creating something new that is the true prize. 🏆 #CostofFutureCareAnalysis #FunctionalCapacityEvaluation #MedicalMalpractice #LifeCarePlanner

Hi Linkedin network! During my Fall semester of 2022, I worked to complete a Rehabilitation Portfolio to design and compose a single resource for material that is useful to know for specific settings for occupational therapy, such as acute care. My occupation-based practice class for adults who present with physical impairments during the Fall semester 2022 helped to assist in my development of the resource as the information I included I learned during that course. Certain topics that are present in the portfolio include vitals, monitoring and understanding lab values, interventions for specific conditions, line management, GG codes, AMPAC scores and much more. This resource was a great way to review my knowledge prior to beginning my acute care fieldwork as well as a resource to use during my fieldwork to help me better learn as a student. The portfolio is separated into differing sections to help better locate information. This resource was a great way to test my knowledge and have everything in one place to quickly locate information. I completed the final draft of the portfolio on November 22nd, 2022.

In our #PostgradPlaybook series, Aoibheann Coughlan talks about how the Masters in occupational therapy prepared her for practice. “The lectures were all very interesting and covered many different areas, from anatomy and physiology to occupational science and preparation for practice. There are many opportunities for interdisciplinary working, completing modules and group projects with physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians. This allowed us to learn more about the roles of the team members we would be working with when on clinical practice." Continue to read: https://lnkd.in/eh-CJwfQ #PostgradAtUL #StayCurious
