Experienced CEO/MD | Transformational Business Leader | Driving Innovation, Growth & Strategic Partnerships
It’s very flattering to be listed in the HortWeek Power List 2024, in such esteemed company. But really, who actually has the power to transform the landscape for British growers? Let me propose three low-cost agenda items for Sir Mark Spencer MP. 1. Fixing the border control process for phytosanitary controls for the £770m of plants and plant products. The “world’s most effective border” is burdensome and costly, and fails in design and execution. 2. Create an efficient and proportionate regulatory system for seed treatments and other plant protection products. The UK is not getting products which are approved for overseas growers. Are we serious about food security? 3. Ensuring proposed legislative changes to peat usage isn’t a catastrophic cliff-edge for British growers and retailers. Thank you Sir Mark. The whole industry is here to help! #horticulture #hortweek Matthew Appleby

The month of March proved to be a wet one once again for many of the Demonstrator Hubs, but the signs of Spring are evident at all of them. Willows are in leaf and catkin, so have been attracting insects with their early crop of pollen. The alder and poplar have buds at most sites and the black locust 'Turbo' has some yellow flowers showing at some of the hubs. Miscanthus giganteus plots are showing signs of green shoots and the Miscanthus Athena is due to be re-planted at most sites during April (ground conditions permitting). In general, things are looking good with minimal pest damage, no diseases noticed and most plants recovering well from any wind damage over the winter. Check out what's been happening at our Demonstrator Hubs during March: https://loom.ly/W2OVxkM

🎙️ 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! DMRI looks forward to welcoming you to this year's first lunch webinar on January 30th at 12:00, where our skilled speaker, Marchen Hviid, will share insights on "Boar production – implications for meat quality?" (the webinar will be conducted in Danish). 🐖 Traditionally, all boars have been castrated to avoid the risk of consumers getting meat with boar taint on their plates. But is it really necessary? Not all boars have an odor issue, and farmers are increasingly exploring alternatives to avoid piglet castration. In addition to the environmental benefits of boar production, it has been found that boars have better feed efficiency than barrows.
