I spent sometime this morning reflecting on the amazing LEAD Network annual conference. Once again such an inspirational set of speakers and a phenomenal opportunity to network with like minded people. When I was asked by the wonderful Elaine Parr to co-chair the new LEAD Digital Chapter with the equally wonderful Anna Hannemann 🚀, PhD , I was worried about the stereotypical image this would portray. Why should a 50+ white male help to lead and drive this new chapter? Well, nearly 2 years on and, as I transition from Co-chair to being on the advisory board, I reflect on what is means to be a male ally and how critical this is to reach gender parity. How often as white males in the digital tech arena, do we find ourselves in the minority? I’d say almost never. Just attending the LEAD conferences first in Paris and now Dusseldorf changed that. I was surrounded by women, in group sessions with women and networked with women. I was the minority. I found myself acting and behaving differently. I was much quieter than my usual self (I realise those who know me would say that is impossible!😉) and I found myself reflecting more. What I took away was to think about being back in the work place where this position is reversed. As a male ally, it’s vital I learn to sit back, bring in the voices of the minorities in the room, and learn from the more diverse thinking that surely comes from this more inclusive interaction. #maleallies are critical to make the change. An unexpected way to improve your win rate by 27%: Improve the diversity in your ideation. Aka the collaboration bonus. It was great to see Lucia van den Brink ✨️ up on stage at Conversion Hotel showing how diversity ensures we get more and better ideas. Here were three great takeaways: 1. Use the 1-2-4 brainstorm technique: first alone, then present to each other in pairs and then the best ideas in fours. This ensures there are better ideas vs the ideas everyone agrees on. 2. Separate ideation from prioritization to make it super simple to share ideas (even add others ideas to the backlog from meetings for them). 3. Measure the number of departments involved and number of people who submit ideas to ensure you are promoting diversity and checking if it is improving. Too many companies lack diversity, this is one of the reasons why Lucia and I started Women in Experimentation community. To help women get a leg up and improve diversity in speaking and companies. This Women's History Month, I had the privilege to attend the HACR Latina Empow(h)er Summit and hear from so many amazing women, thanks to PepsiCo and the support of my manager, Anthony Netto . Here are just a few of the words of wisdom that I heard and things that I've learned: - golf basics and how it can be used as a tool to conduct business and accelerate success; - greatness starts in your mind; - legacy is about the impact you make and not the actions you take; - to do the things that keep you up at night; - to always win with company; - that empowerment comes from within first; - to always center on who you are, and success will follow; - to anticipate and practice, practice, practice; - that if you don't ask, you don't get; - not to use too many words to say too little; - that you need to understand the rules of the game to be a winning player; and - that no one can tell your story better than you. Over the past few days, i've also had the pleasure of making wonderful, strong, agile, resilient, new PepsiCo amigas. Leaving the summit, I feel lighter, embracing all of the facets that make me, me - my 'no sabo' kid latina-ness, my blackness, my american-ness, my diversity, my this AND that, my motherhood, my resilience; my humanity; and adopt my new mantra 'soy poderosa' today and always. #HACRLES24 #happyWHM #somospoderosas
