Today I'm glad to see my recent work on the nature of the evaluation discipline published in the new edited book at SAGE, "Core Concepts in Evaluation: Classic Writings and Contemporary Commentary". A big thank you to the team of editors who supported the authors with professionalism and wisdom. In this chapter I discuss the need to develop substantive theories of program evaluation around its subject matter, i.e., the value determination of social interventions, as opposed to a discipline that limits itself to theories of evaluation practice. This is so fascinating. Apparently ‘we’re more likely to remember a message if we have to generate the answer, rather than simply being told it’. Which makes total sense, as it’s involving the viewer in the story - making us a part of it Another of my all-time favourite research findings is from my days commissioning consumer research in the arts sector. A key question was whether the image for a show should be symbolic / ‘clever’ or straight. The finding was that how hard audiences wanted to work at the imagery was in direct proportion to how hard they wanted to work at engaging with the show itself. Thus the west end musical or Christmas panto needs a very different visual approach from the new writing in the studio theatre - with significant implications for a mixed venue trying to implement a ‘consistent’ brand style We also found that the most appealing performing arts images visually mimicked the experience of being in a darkened auditorium looking at a spot-lit stage. Not literally but symbolically e.g. lighter central image on a darker b/g, good depth of field not flat matt imagery etc. Which set me up with a fascination for semiotics and how images are decoded Who else has an example of research findings that blew their mind and changed how they think? #research #insights

We just learned that our book "Rethinking Rural: Reflections on Today, Insights for the Future" is a finalist for a 2024 Midwest Book Award in two categories: Nonfiction - Anthologies and Nonfiction - Social Science/Political Science/Culture. We asked 10 people how they would describe rural America today, and what they imagine it will like for the next generation. Each of the authors shares their concepts and their answers based on the lens through which they see the world. This anthology begins the Rethinking Rural series, aimed at highlighting how people of diverse backgrounds and experiences understand rural historically and how they foresee its future, adding to the ongoing discussion of the multifaceted nature of rural America.
