AI in writing causes more harm than benefit to research students. Even though it appears to have the potential to improve writing efficiency at times, nonetheless, it limits the writing abilities of the students. The personal touch, originality, creativity, depth of understanding, and critical thinking are all consistently absent from AI-generated writing. I tested the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and other AI tools for academic writing. I found that AI-generated writing often failed to meet the standards and expectations of academia. AI tools also generate fictitious references that research students might be unaware of. Research students should disregard AI in academic writing. The less they use it, the more they develop skills and confidence in writing.
