How often do we genuinely value the work of our traffic management authorities? Let's take a moment to recognize their unending efforts to ensure road safety. A prime example of their initiatives is the "Zero is Good" program spearheaded by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police in Chennai. The goal of this initiative is simple - to achieve zero accidents on Chennai roads and to make sure people adhere to traffic rules. The program incorporates several strategies such as: - Education campaigns, - Road improvements, - Strict law enforcement. The outcome? A substantial decrease in road accidents since the program was launched. However, the success of this initiative goes beyond numbers. Interestingly, it has sparked a positive shift in people's attitude towards road safety. The Rotary Club of Madras West shows solidarity with the 'Zero is Good' campaign. The roads are in terrible condition, and the traffic jams are causing hours of delays every single day. Local villagers are protesting as this chaos is affecting daily life on a massive scale. Despite repeated complaints, we are receiving false responses from the authorities through RTI. Instead of building more roads, we urge the Road Minister to focus on improving the quality of existing ones. Whenever there’s just 5 minutes of rain, the entire stretch turns into a disaster zone with traffic jams lasting 2+ hours due to the poor quality of the roads. The Punishing Signal: A Lesson in Road Discipline Driving in urban India often feels like a test of patience, especially when reckless honking turns every commute into a stressful ordeal. It’s not just a nuisance; it contributes significantly to sound pollution, disrupts pedestrians, and creates chaos. Honking before the traffic light turns green is a common yet maddening behaviour that needs immediate attention. That’s why I was impressed by the innovative campaign ‘The Punishing Signal’ with a message "Honk more, wait more" by Mumbai Police, in collaboration with FCB Interface. This creative initiative addressed the issue head-on by installing traffic systems that increased the redlight duration whenever honking exceeded a certain threshold. The idea of Teach impatient honkers a lesson while promoting calm and responsible behaviour on the road. This campaign is a brilliant example of how simple, yet impactful solutions can tackle deep-rooted issues in our driving culture. Personally, I hope to see similar systems implemented in my locality as well. It’s high time we embrace initiatives that make our roads safer and more pleasant for everyone. I truly appreciate the efforts of Mumbai Police and FCB Interface for taking this significant step toward creating better road culture!
