Joe Biden and Xi Jinping spoke on the phone on 2 April, mostly about reducing tension in the South China Sea and Taiwan. There was no mention of the US and its allies intending to "decouple" from China when it comes to aircraft manufacturing, as has been done with semiconductors and telecommunications. Just as well. China is pushing ahead with its goal of attaining self-sufficiency in producing its own airplanes, a long and arduous journey that has taken over a decade and will take another one, at least, before it can even come close to Airbus and Boeing, never mind reach parity (that is a distant future, if at all). Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, better known as COMAC, showcased its latest product, the C919 single-aisle jet that has flown much all over mainland China but not overseas until it flew to Changi for the Singapore Airshow in February. The C919 is, to all intents and purposes, a poor man's version of the Airbus A320. The aircraft made a good impression, nevertheless, displaying a quietness that befits the CFM International (CFM) LEAP engines that power it. Inside, the China Eastern plane looked neat and natty. Following the airshow the C919 made a tour of Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand) as well as Malaysia and Indonesia, countries COMAC feels it has a fighting chance of getting orders. So far there's none. But there's a good chance there will be a few, in the coming years. Until that day comes, the Chinese will continue to tweak and rework its planes and engines, and flood its domestic market with these homegrown products. Is the Asian widebody returning to long-haul service? Yes. Is it still flying short-haul domestic? Also yes. Our latest analysis for Visual Approach Research subscribers focuses on the widebody fleet in China and Japan. The question emerges whether the domestic use of the aircraft is due to a lack of transpacific demand, or insufficient domestic narrowbody lift. https://lnkd.in/gRyabBQB #aviation #airlinesandairplanes

Amidst Boeing’s chaotic management crisis and Airbus’s backlog of deliveries, I wouldn’t be surprised if more countries were considering alternatives, especially now that Comac has built a name for itself. Though it will be interesting to see whether they’ll decide to fully challenge the status quo by developing long-haul fleet programs.
When will you fly Chinese? In this video, I look at the rise of COMAC, China's commercial aircraft manufacturer, and its potential to disrupt the Boeing-Airbus duopoly. ➡ The Birth of COMAC and the ARJ21 ➡ Launch of the C919 ➡ Challenges for COMAC (production, parts, international certifications) ➡ Future of Flying on Chinese Aircraft Watch Josh Cahill’s C919 experience: https://lnkd.in/dSXT9y9J Watch Simple Flying Airworthiness Certification: https://lnkd.in/dKVkZ3jh

Challenges in Aviation: Japan, Germany, and Brazil’s Path to Competitiveness While nations like the U.S. and France lead in aviation, countries like Japan, Germany, and Brazil face distinct challenges. Despite their technological strength, Japan and Germany struggle with the high costs and limited scale of full-scale aircraft manufacturing. Brazil, home to Embraer, has faced global competition and fluctuating demand, making it difficult to maintain dominance. All three excel in aerospace components but highlight the complexities of sustaining a competitive edge in this demanding industry. #AviationIndustry #GlobalCompetitiveness #Aerospace #Innovation #BusinessLeadership

When Airbus announced the A320neo in December 2010, Boeing responded by downplaying its significance. Boeing claimed that the A320neo’s all-in direct operating cost advantage over the 737-800 was only about 3%-4%, and suggested that the benefits Airbus touted might not be as substantial as expected. In 2019 A320 orders overtook B737 orders, and Boeing's ongoing problems have been widely reported. In 2023 at the International Paris Air Show Boeing's former Commercial CEO stated, “I do see China emerging as the third competitor, but I think they still have decades of work to go." Meanwhile, at the Farnborough International Airshow earlier this week, Airbus' Commercial CEO Christian Scherer on the question of COMAC said “It’s not when, or if, they’re a competitor so far; they’re very much influential in the People’s Republic of China and perhaps in the surrounding areas and countries." In the fifth century BC, Chinese military general and strategist Sun Tzu wrote, "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." The parallels are alarming. Aviation Week Network: https://lnkd.in/giQM5fVT #aviation #aerospace #airtravel #boeing #airbus #comac #theartofwar

🔔 My key insights after two days of #FIA (Farnborough International AirShow): ➡ Supply Chain crisis and production ramp-up are the key topic of OEMs and supplier companies. #AEROEXCELLENCE (TM) #International is a new initiative launched by the industry associations of France (GIFAS), Germany (BDLI) and UK (ADS) to standardize assessments and improve collaboration across the supply chain ➡ #Supplier firms are increasingly facing #profitability #issues due to significant increased #material #prices, #inflation and #delayed #ramp-#up. The book you’re referring to is The Competitive Advantage of Nations written by Michael E. Porter. It explores how and why certain nations achieve economic success in specific industries and delves into the factors that contribute to or hinder their competitive advantage.

March 21, 2024, has not been a bad day for Airbus. Two announcements from Asian airlines confirmed the trend that demand for widebody aircraft is strong, both for fleet renewal and growth. Korean Air said it intends to buy 33 A350s, including 6 -900s and 27 of the larger A350-1000s. This makes Korean a new A350 operator, with the -1000s potentially taking over some capacity from its A380s in the next decade. Japan Airlines ordered 21 A350-900s as part of its 2030 growth strategy that targets to capture more inbound and outbound international traffic. One A350 is for replacement of the aircraft on the domestic network that was lost in the Tokyo Haneda accident on January 2.
