Despite the rain and the less than ideal weather, a very keen crowd gathered to enjoy the first Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ Summer Site Tour Series event of the year: Ōtepoti Dunedin Tour of Jetty Street Development and other key buildings within the heritage Warehouse Precinct, Ōtepoti Dunedin. Thanks to the team from McCoy Wixon for leading the tour. Past, present and future were discussed, with particular interest from attendees around strengthening techniques used on the old buildings and the juxtaposition of modern and historical materials. Thank you to our Canterbury Chapter Chair Irene Boles for organisation of the event and putting on her UDINZ hat to lead the event for UDINZ. #udinzsummersitetourseries #Whereindustryandinsightmeet #connectcollaboratecommunity #resilientsustainablehealthy

This map, which I developed as part of a study on mosque accessibility, illustrates the service networks around mosques in the Agdal district of Fez, based on walking distances of 200m, 400m, and 600m—equivalent to 5, 10, and 15-minute walks, respectively. With the growing emphasis on urban proximity and the “15-minute city” concept, the role of mosques as key community centers deserves reconsideration. By situating essential services within walkable distances, we can enhance urban sustainability, encourage social cohesion, and reduce reliance on transportation. This map is part of a broader reflection on how to optimize mosque locations to strengthen accessibility and foster a more integrated and sustainable urban landscape.

In Auckland, North Central North Island, New Zealand, Stevens Lawson Architects designed a stunning community centric living space to help combat homelessness. Commissioned by Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai, the Mass Timber project is a bastion of sustainability. Named HomeGround, the multi-purpose development combines accommodations alongside heath and human services for residents of Auckland. In addition to utilizing sustainable mass timber, architects integrated Cross-Laminated Timber into its design as the primary structural material. The builders implemented a sort-at-source waste management system, to reduce construction waste. In building the project, the developers used only non-toxic, locally sourced materials. With the entire lifecycle of the building being taken into consideration, designers added in overhangs and high performance glazing to reduce solar gain within the facility and to help reduce energy usage. Strategically placed windows and door openings allow for natural venthilarion throughout the interior spaces, and a high thermal envelope reduce the need for air conditioning. In a phenomenally innovate and sustainable approach, the building has integrated vertical gardens, alongside a rooftop urban farm with a green house. These integrations further add to the ability for the building to naturally cool and breathe. The rooftop garden offers a place of community and healing, where residents and visitors can grow flowers, vegetables and herbs, which can all be harvested and used. Rooftop composting reduces plant waste, and provides new enriched soil over time for the gardens. This project is the embodiment of what it means to build truly sustainably. This incredible project will hopefully act as a model and resource for building sustainably in cities across the world. World Ocean’s Day: Celebrating with the 2023 OBEL AWARD Winner, Living Breakwaters by SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC June 8 is World Oceans Day, designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008. The day was established to raise awareness about human beings' connection with the oceans. The OBEL AWARD has always advocated connecting the built and natural environments. Our oceans and other bodies of water are not just resources; they are lifelines. They generously provide us with food, biodiversity, transportation, economic benefits, leisure, and the health of people and the planet. The 2023 OBEL Award-winning project exemplifies how working with nature can bring long-lasting positive changes. Thanks to this restorative project, the underwater ecosystem in Staten Island, NY, is undergoing a phenomenal transformation. Widely considered a model for climate-adaptive green infrastructure, Living Breakwaters is a project with a layered approach to risk reduction, enhancing biodiversity as well as physical, ecological, and social resilience along the South Shore of Staten Island. #WorldOceansDay To learn more: https://lnkd.in/d6bMEsfh

These days, we’re focusing on analyzing the dynamics of public spaces in the Costa Rodona and Llobet areas of Sant Joan de Vilatorrada. This analysis is part of the Urban Revitalization Plan we’re developing for the area. Our goal is to better understand how these spaces are used and how we can enhance their accessibility and functionality for everyone. #UrbanRevitalization #PublicSpaces #CommunityDevelopment #SantJoandeVilatorrada

The owners of Orlando City SC and Orlando Pride want to transform Osceola Heritage Park as part of a $1 billion mixed-use project, but the plans for the site are still preliminary.
Project Next would result in a combined headquarters and training facility for Orlando City SC and Orlando Pride, a development academy, expanded seating at Osceola County Stadium, and a mixed-use residential, tourism, and shopping district.

Testing tactical urbanism in Constanța, as part of #ReValueCities re-valuing urban planning and design waterfront cities, in the face of climate change
Did I ever tell you about that time Tim Marxen and I sent out a large group of Re-Value Cities in Constanța, Romania with a map, some chalk, postcards, and a mission to illuminate, educate, ideate and provocate using #tactical #urbanism? The results were amazing. Stay tuned! We will share more soon about this day-long activity as part of the Re-Value Study Visit in Constanța. And I also hope that the Municipality will be inspired to use tactical urbanism approaches to engage more deeply with the community as part of their work on Re-Value. There is so much creativity and potential in this dynamic seaside city! Thanks to all of the participants for their joyful contributions and especially Anna Kaczorowska and Ingfrid Lyngstad for building the foundation from which we jumped! "Leveraging culture for positive urban change" In this insightful article, our UIA expert Chiara Lucchini explores the connection between the Halandri experience and key reflections shared at the European Urban Initiative #PolicyLab. At the end of September 2024 the City of Halandri hosted the first European Urban Initiative #PolicyLab. Aimed at exploring the role of #culture and #culturalheritage for stronger #communities and #sustainablecities, the event gathered city officers, practitioners, politicians and experts from 16 different EU member states. A relevant learning and exchange initiative, the Policy Lab was a priceless occasion for the Cultural H.ID.RA.N.T. partnership to reflect on outputs and outcomes of the locally performed actions, and to discuss with a wider and experienced audience the potential for #transferability, #scalability and further development of what has been achieved so far. Have a look at my latest article where the relationship between the experience brought about in Halandri is explained in relation with the reflection and perspectives offered by the Policy Lab.
