The US makes a change to how it categorizes race and ethnicity less than a year after the SCOTUS race based admissions ruling. 🤔 The article states: - Under the revisions, questions about race and ethnicity that previously were asked separately on forms will be combined into a single question. That will give respondents the option to pick multiple categories at the same time. - A Middle Eastern and North African category will be added to the choices available for questions about race and ethnicity. People descended from places such as Lebanon, Iran, Egypt and Syria had been encouraged to identify as white, but now will have the option of identifying themselves in the new group. - The changes also strike from federal forms the words “Negro” and “Far East,” now widely regarded as pejorative, as well as the terms “majority” and “minority,” because they fail to reflect the nation’s complex racial and ethnic diversity, some officials say. - The revisions also encourage the collection of detailed race and ethnicity data beyond the minimum standards, such as “Haitian” or “Jamaican” for someone who checks “Black." I'm not sure how to feel about this. There are certainly pros & cons. I see this as a win in some areas like adding MENA and giving more options to pick, but also as a loss in other areas, like showing the racial diversity of MENA, dividing "Black", or accurately categorizing Afro-Latine. I'm skeptical yet hopeful that this change will be used for good .. and not weaponized for political gain. #race #dei #ethnicity

I found these numbers mind-boggling and terrifying! The inference from this article is that these attitudes are intertwined and are indicative of a particular system of values that is undoubtedly held by a proportion of Australians. The questions are: 1. What proportion? 2. Is it growing? 3. Does it have a disproportionate influence on the Australian political system? Does anyone have any data comparing Australians in general to the US, and then comparing rural and Australian non-rural populations on their attitudes towards Xenophobia, Conspiracism, Antidemocratic beliefs, and Justification of violence? Australia, including its rural areas, has so far to go on so many aspects of social justice and equality, but the battle will be even harder than I ever imagined if our numbers are anything like these. Today at the #DNC, we're in Chicago, where we released our new Axios-Harris Poll Vibes survey on Latino voters with Noticias Telemundo Communications. I joined a panel today with FMR. DMC Chairman Tom Perez. Democratic Latino Voters have dramatically closed the enthusiasm gap with the GOP since July: 1. 83% are highly likely to vote +12 pts; 63% enthusiastic to vote +23 pts; both are statistically tied. 2. Millennial Latino Voters see the largest jump in voting likelihood, +16 pts, and are enthusiastic to vote +20. 3. Personal Economics matters 2.5-3x more than any other issue: 58% economy, 23% immigration and 18% reproductive rights 4. Latinos feel most impt. issues facing the country: Inflation 47% +3 (July); housing 24%; jobs/wages 23%, +2; crime & safety 23%; abortion 22%, +5; and 13% Israel/Gaza +6. 5.
