Did you know that many adults in immigrant families avoid safety net programs for fear of potential #immigration consequences? During the last two federal administrations, immigrants have experienced rapid #policy shifts affecting their access to public benefits such as #housing assistance. Urban research suggests that many people in immigrant families are missing out on these essential supports, including many of the 3.5 million US citizen and lawfully present children in low-income families who live with at least one undocumented parent. Explore the findings in Urban’s new summary. https://urbn.is/4fJDBSx

We are sick and saddened to see that misinformation about immigrants and our immigration system is being used to stir up fear and division throughout our nation. This is far from the first time that immigrants have been unfairly blamed for problems in the U.S., but the pain and fear caused by these messages is real and fresh. Cultivating communities of belonging is an act of resistance when people in power choose to promote and enact policies that divide us. We know that in reality, immigrants have always and continue to contribute extensively to American history, economy, and culture. We are a nation of immigrants after all. Locally, immigrants in Kent County contributed more than $5 billion to the GDP in 2021 alone. Additionally, undocumented immigrants (25% of the total immigrant population) contributed $15.4 million to federal taxes and $11.2 million to state and local taxes. On a national level, 45% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants and their children. These numbers represent people that we know here at Treetops. And the suggestion that our community is better off without these families grieves us deeply, and we know it grieves many of you too. Mass deportation is very simply not a solution to our nation's problems. Every member of this community – immigrants and non-immigrants alike – have the potential to make this city, this state and this country a better place to live, work and play. Believing otherwise is not only enormously wrong and incredibly short sighted, it's also dangerous and a threat to the American way of life. To protect democracy, our children's future, and a respected place in the world, we must come together and not only believe the impact immigrants have on our community but actively work together to create a sense of belonging that enables each of us to achieve our dreams. #spreadwelcome #belongingisresistance #refugees #immigrants #choosewelcome #wewelcome #michigan #grandrapids

Director of Evaluation and Research @Reading Reimagined, a program of @AERDF | Education Research and Development
One in four children in the United States are children of immigrants, with the vast majority being U.S. citizens. Nevertheless, major U.S. safety net programs often exclude children of immigrants through its strong ties to parental employment and the immigration system. Child Trends’ new brief examines policies and practices that limit safety net access for children of immigrants and provides recommendations to address these barriers and promote economic equity for immigrant families. https://lnkd.in/g-pcYqw7

The COVID-19 pandemic expanded immigrants' access to public benefits and highlighted how public benefit programs can reduce poverty for immigrant children and families. However, with the end of the pandemic and the return to standard eligibility rules, many immigrants have now lost access to public benefit programs. It's critical that service providers understand the complex rules surrounding immigrant eligibility to help clients navigate this stressful time. Read this Migration Policy Institute report (https://buff.ly/3TsZtIS) to learn more about immigrants' eligibility for programs and services related to general assistance, health and nutrition, employment and income, education, housing, and driver’s licenses, according to the standard eligibility rules that are back in force. #PeerTA #TANF #TA #TechnicalAssistance #OFA #ACF #HumanServices #SocialServices #TechnicalAssistanceServices #Eligibility #Immigrants #COVID-19 #Benefits

This topic is always timely, relevant, and misunderstood...so let the data shed some light on the reality of undocumented community members and the California economy: "This segment of our population generates around $152 billion in value added within the state economy, or 4.9% of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP)...California’s undocumented immigrants, paid, in total, some $22 billion toward various tax channels. Setting aside the contribution by employers toward Social Security, approximately $17.5 billion is paid by the undocumented immigrants themselves." When will we build a pathway to proper work authorization and benefits for those we call neighbors, classmates, colleagues and friends?
Here is a link to my latest op-ed, which brings attention to the urgency of integrating undocumented immigrants. For over fifty years, the overwhelming majority of Americans have been battling how to live paycheck to paycheck, and in the last eight years, all the attention has been focused on immigrants as the source of their misery. The article provides information and statistics and uses California as a shining example, showing that every Californian shares the benefits of undocumented immigrants’ contributions and is responsible for their well-being. It shows that California’s economy, the fifth largest in the world, would be severely damaged if all its undocumented were deported. Please read it and share it with others on your social media. Life Expectancy, Birth & Death data, Obesity in children, Diabetic Amputations, ER admission, Diabetes, Chronic Kidney Disease
2moHispanics in San Antonio have the highest Diabetic Amputation rate, the lowest health insurance rates, the lowest income or education rates, and the highest rates of undocumented. The Westside of San Antonio is over 90% Hispanic. I calculated Bexar County life expectancy 2016 by zip code. Westside 76.7, Northside 96.4. Awarded RWJF Culture of Health. Grouping zipcodes increases statistical reliability & reduces the years needed. There is little money in the Westside of San Antonio compared to the Northside, where hospitals and clinics are built. We need an approach to undocumented feel-safe, low-cost nursing clinics. If we hope to overcome poverty, we can't afford to burden families with the high cost of healthcare. A group of San Antonio Westside zipcodes has a diabetic amputation rate of 36.5 per 1,000 diabetics compared to 24.0 for a group of Northside zip codes. Grouping Zipcodes increases statistical reliability. Westside 49% late prenatal care & 74% were Medicaid-funded and 35% of mothers were obese. Northside 19% late prenatal care, 13% Medicaid funded and 15% mothers were obese. The rate of Diabetes death is 5 times higher in the Westside compared to Northside.
