Blågårdsgade: Everyday Simplicity of Shared Streets in Copenhagen! Copenhagen Road Safety & Active Travel Series - Post #8 Shared streets needn't be fancy; they can be modest and commonplace. Blågårdsgade is a good example of a shared street in Copenhagen. Here pedestrians, cyclists and local car traffic share the same street space. It seems to be working well with an overall calming effect and a sense of courtesy and mutual awareness. Video: slow meandering walk down Blågårdsgade. About this series: Over the next 3 months, we'll share curated snapshots of Copenhagen's streets and urban environment. Our goal is to bring more road safety and active travel learnings to Australia/New Zealand. Stay tuned! Before 1962 Copenhagen was a city dominated by cars. Since then, the city has evolved to become one of the most pedestrian and cyclist friendly places in the world. Apart from Australia’s royal connection with Denmark, several Australian cities have been strongly influenced by Danish approaches to urban design. Seeing is believing and the snapshots we’re bringing you provide an opportunity to imagine what is possible. Via della Conoscenza is a transformative project that aims to connect a large part of Bologna's territory and enhance the city's cultural, social and historical heritage. The initiative envisages a continuous, high quality and safe route that promotes sustainable travel, while creating strong links between Bologna's main centres of scientific education and technological research and its neighbourhoods, parks, gardens and transport networks. The project is conceived as a corridor of public space that not only integrates the existing urban fabric, but also lays the foundation for socially aware urban regeneration initiatives. Via della Conoscenza will connect planned urban developments with the city's cultural, environmental and historical centres, particularly in the north-western quadrant. MIC-HUB’s contribution focuses on residents’ quality of life, providing opportunities for multimodal transport and promoting tourism by highlighting the unique value of the areas crossed. The new route’s integration with existing infrastructure and the promotion of cycling will have a positive impact on both the daily commute and leisure travel. Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project calls for dedicated signage, graphic design, communications, innovation and technology to establish its identity. Micro-plazas or hubs will be strategically placed along the route to provide new uses for urban spaces, encouraging community engagement and synergies between users. Ultimately, Via della Conoscenza is much more than a cycle path; it is an active, flexible and coordinated urban infrastructure that reinterprets and redistributes Bologna's urban spaces. Through its focus on sustainable mobility, the project offers a vision of a dynamic and interconnected cityscape in the ongoing evolution of Bologna's identity. 🚶♀️🌍 “Ville Marchable” becomes Walkable City! 🌍🚶♂️ We are thrilled to announce the launch of Walkable City Lisboa, the international extension of our Ville Marchable initiative, which we are implementing for the Walk 21 conference taking place from October 14th to 18th, 2024! 🌍 Why Lisbon? Because walkability is not just a French issue, but an important topic at the European level. We firmly believe that a city where it is pleasant to walk is a healthier, more friendly, and more sustainable city – and Lisbon is one of those European cities. 💡 How does it work? Just like with Ville Marchable, our tool allows Lisbon’s residents and visitors to express their feelings about their walking experience. They can evaluate the streets by indicating where they enjoy walking and what they particularly appreciate: sidewalk quality, infrastructure, greenery, calmness... 🌳🛤️ It’s simple! Just click on each street and provide your feedback on various criteria using smileys 🙂 and 🙁. The goal is to create a detailed map of walking quality in the city, which will help policymakers and urban planners improve pedestrian spaces. 🔗 Now it’s your turn: https://lnkd.in/e3ybZwnR 👣 Together, let’s make our cities more walkable! Sina Ataee, co-founder of Mammute Urban Innovation Studio (MUIS) under Mammute Accelerator Holding, recently presented at the pre-event of the first Asian Cities Innovation Challenges, incity. asia. In his presentation, "Innovation: Powering Solutions for Urban Challenges," he emphasized that urban innovation transcends technological advancements. He shared insights on global practices, including Copenhagen's and Tokyo's cycling infrastructures, Amsterdam's sharing city projects, Singapore's integrated traffic management, Curitiba's BRT system, Bangkok's micro-apartments and floating cities, Nanjing's vertical forests, Hong Kong's rooftop farming, and Bengaluru's smart waste management. Ataee underscored that true urban innovation is fundamentally about fostering innovative citizens. Key takeaways from his talk included: 1. Technology as a tool, not the sole focus. 2. The importance of public knowledge dissemination and bottom-up collaboration. 3. The need for developing local innovation ecosystems through small, frequent innovative groups. 4. Tailoring solutions to local assets and capabilities. He highlighted that an innovative city is defined by its active, engaged citizens. In today's rapidly urbanizing world, green spaces in cities are more than just aesthetic enhancements—they are vital components of urban life. Urban green spaces, such as parks, gardens, and greenways, play a crucial role in improving physical and mental health, enhancing air quality, and providing essential ecological services. They also serve as crucial gathering places for community activities and social interaction. One standout example of urban green space done well is Chicago's Millennium Park. Originally a rail yard and parking lots, this area was transformed into a vibrant, multi-functional park that includes the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture (affectionately known as "The Bean"), the Crown Fountain, and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a venue for free music events and performances. Millennium Park is not only a green retreat in the heart of the city but also a space that actively engages the community with arts, music, and interactive installations. Another notable example is Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. This futuristic park features innovative sustainable technologies and extraordinary botanical gardens, including the famous Supertree structures. It not only serves as a green lung for the city but is also a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, demonstrating the potential of green spaces to boost local economies through tourism. In Europe, Madrid’s Madrid Rio project transformed a major highway into a vibrant riverside park. This project has not only reclaimed the riverfront for pedestrian and recreational use but has also reconnected the city with its river, enhancing community well-being and biodiversity. These examples highlight how well-planned urban green spaces can be dynamically integrated into the city fabric, offering not just environmental benefits but also becoming beloved centers of urban life. They prove that when green spaces are thoughtfully designed to be accessible, engaging, and responsive to the needs of the community, they enhance the quality of city life immeasurably. What are other examples of urban green spaces done well? #UrbanPlanning #Sustainability #GreenSpaces #CommunityDevelopment #CityLife #UrbanParks
