...in the book box in my (South of France) village today, I found one of my favorite reads on architectural theory: Thermal delight in Architecture by Lisa Heschong What a delight! A poem to architectural climates, this book invites us to think of buildings as landscapes of thermal moods. For me, reveling in the thermal variances that architecture can provide is key to forging a deeper bond with our surroundings. Thermal experiences connect us viscerally to the rhythms of nature. I was included with a great group of contributors to Places Journal’s “Field Notes on Repair” tracing a necessary paradigm shift in fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design from building the world to repairing the world. The series asked: “How might professions premised on growth and consumption — new buildings, new landscapes, new cities — adapt to the exigencies of degrowth and reuse? “Building” is a powerful metaphor that structures how we think about progress and accomplishment. Now they are launching a new collaboration with the City of Malmö (Malmö stad, Malmö in the making) on this topic searching for the best examples that can contribute to a more inclusive urban development and the creation of unique places. In a time where new constructions can look generic and lack a connection to the local environment, a stronger focus on local materials, culture, social matters and site-specific aesthetics might help to pave the way for longer lasting and more sustainable constructions.
