TOMORROW at Ministarstvo prostora / Ministry of Space!! This Tuesday at 6pm, we will have great lecture about urban conflicts, and the lecturer will be Gabu Heindl: architect and urban planner in Vienna. Her lecture will be structured around current anti-capitalist assemblies and struggles over housing and public space. When commons and public space have to be defended and expanded against capital takeovers, the politics of radical democracy maintain the task of deepening democratic relationships. A radical-democratic conception of architecture and urbanism connects with popular agency originating with democratic social and political movements. Entering alliances with anti-racist or feminist politics, planning enters into such articulations not without critically examining his or her own role. While planning is too often prone to narrowing the scope of their concerns and, therefore, to practices of “solutionism”, Gabu would rather tackle socio-political contexts, conflicts and contradictions by offering for discussion the concept of “nonsolution”. She will unfold these topics with regard to her architectural practice within current anti-capitalist and intersectional struggles over housing and public space as well as in correspondence to the research at their department ARCHITECTURE CITIES ECONOMIES at Kassel University on issues of ownership and, more generally, political economy within architecture and urban planning.

We are currently teaching in the context of an unprecedented world crisis: On all continents, cities and their natural settings are being devastated by the absence of basic planning and administrative controls, by political inertia, transactional economic relationships, generic design, and impermanent construction ... During their formative educational experiences, future architects, urbanists, and landscape architects are exposed to a critique of the processes and methods that have brought the cities of the world and nature to the precipice ... As citizens of the world, it is our moral imperative to engage in this critical conversation and take decisive action to create change. The future of our cities and natural environments depends on our actions today. Stand with us in the fight for a sustainable and prosperous world. https://lnkd.in/g4B7brXP

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. BA2 Humanities: Tracing the City 🗺️📍 This semester at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), we had a lecture series called 'Tracing the City' which explored different aspects of architecture in terms of urban theory. Lectures ranged from unethical planning practices to the history of production in relation to society. Delving into the philosophy behind urbanism was really interesting, especially when considering how our own surroundings fit into the narrative of a city. Attached is my final submission for this module, where we were tasked to analyse the urban realm we live in: 1. Respond to a section of Oxford Road in the style of Raymond Unwin 2. Create a narrative about Oxford Road in the style of Italo Calvino 3. Unpack an aspect of urban "nature" and it's relationship with human systems 4. Explore a relation of urban infrastructure, its flows and interaction with daily life Thanks to Dimitra Kourrisova and guest speakers for the great lecture series!
