Detailed proposed routes for first phase of new West Yorkshire mass transit network released

#LANJIndustryNews: 🗞️ NYC and the MTA will introduce congestion tolling that will increase drivers' tolls to enter points of Manhattan south of 60th Street in Spring 2024. Carlos Waters of CNBC reports that the zone-based tolling program, the first of its kind in the U.S., can potentially generate 15 billion dollars in yearly revenue; according to Richard Davey, president of New York City's Transit Authority, the organization will use the money to finance: - Four New Metro-North stations for communities in the Bronx 🚆 - Implementation of Clean Bus Technology by 2025 🚌 - Track, Power, & Signal Upgrades Throughout NYC 🚦 While the exact price of the toll has yet to be determined, the price is expected to cost between $9 and $23. By law, passenger vehicles will be charged once a day, while commercial and ride-share services will be charged per trip. 🚐 City of Barrie Expands Their Microtransit Service! 🚐 Four years ago, the Barrie Transit team and RideCo On-Demand Transit introduced on-demand transit to help reshape public transportation in the city. With the service's continued success and high customer satisfaction, Transit ON Demand has now expanded to a total of five zones with plans to add two more in the future. This efficient mobility solution replaces underutilized fixed routes and provides a flexible service for riders. Will riders ever pay enough to pay off this public work? A train from LAX to the Hollywood Bowl? Metro to approve K Line extension routes this fall The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is one step closer to determining the future route of the K Line northern extension — shaping up to be the most expensive rail line so far. The underground line is estimated to cost $11 billion to nearly $15 billion, and will connect two major east-west lines — potentially creating a direct route all the way from LAX to some of the city’s most famous sites. But, it’s not expected to open for 25 years. This blockbuster project promises to cut commuter times in half. A car ride from Los Angeles International Airport to Miracle Mile is about an 80-minute drive. The extension line would decrease travel between the two locations to about 30 minutes. While I was listening to 2GB Drive with Chris O'Keefe (today), he mentioned the issues that the NEW Rozelle Interchange has caused with commuters using or trying to avoid using the Interchange which has also been seen on the local news outlets. I believe that the Minns Govt needs to give the good people of #nsw a #fairgo and give them about 6 weeks to adjust to these new changes to this network with a FREE TOLL PERIOD. They didn't think or did they think about the ongoing cost the tolls will cause coming up to #Christmas or is it they are putting profit over the concerns of the commuters trying to work around these new changes In the "Recommendation: Future toll road contracts should include a mandatory requirement for the toll road operator to provide an initial toll free period to assist user familiarity and allow users to make informed choices." "Rozelle Interchange, WestConnex tolls are calculated using a ‘flag fall’ of $1.57 at the point of entry and then $0.58 per kilometre. After 16.4 kilometres of continuous travel, a toll cap comes into effect. For passenger vehicles, tolls will be capped at a maximum amount of $11.11, heavy vehicles, the maximum toll cap is $33.32 per journey." A century-long dream comes to fruition! The Biden administration, with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's support, is kick-starting the long-dormant Phase Two of the Second Avenue subway project in Manhattan. This extension will bring Q trains up to East Harlem, benefiting over 100,000 daily riders. The federal government is providing an historic $3.4 billion for this phase, which includes stations at 106th Street, 116th Street, and a new terminal at 125th Street with connections to the 4, 5, 6 trains and Metro North. “It's going towards a public transit project serving neighborhoods that have been neglected for years ensuring East Harlem has greater access to jobs, health care and other essential services” said Sen. Chuck Schumer. “This is uptown Grand Central," Congressman Adriano Espaillat said. "Finally, it's a day of reckoning. Finally, people recognize that this is a community that matters," Gov. Kathy Hochul said. The project aims to transform East Harlem's transit system, which has faced neglect for decades. Making using the bus from Spanaway a practical option!

I’ve always been a massive fan of good public transportation. Some cities do it exceptionally well, such as London’s Tube, Singapore’s MRT, and Istanbul’s Metro. While I personally love cars, I also recognize rail services have many advantages. As a New Yorker, I wish I could say New York’s combination of commuter rail- Subway, PATH, LIRR, NJ Transit, and Metro North- could support the large influx of commuters from the tri-state area, but, from what I have seen, our public transportation network cannot adequately meet the needs of daily commuters. The city will start to impose extra fees for cars and trucks. The plan is to use this money from congestion pricing to develop better transportation. However, I believe this is a classic case of “too much, too soon.” Disincentizing cars will add stress to a public transportation service that is already struggling to handle the peak demand times. I hope there can be a realization that a slower and more progressive plan to disincentivize car usage would be better for the residents and businesses of the tristate area.

There is a possibility for passenger rail in the future

Atlanta traffic is already a nightmare today, but what we are stumbling towards now is an unlivable future. Maria Saporta is sounding the alarm in the SaportaReport, but is anyone listening: "Atlanta used to dream big. In the 1960s when the population of metro Atlanta was less than 1 million people, then Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. had a 'Platform for Progress' that called for a regional rail transit system that would have served the entire region. "Back in 2008, the Atlanta region adopted Concept 3 — a plan that called for the expansion of heavy rail along with new light rail and commuter rail throughout the region. We also spoke of smart growth — combining transit and land-use planning — by encouraging development around rail stations. "Today we’ve stopped dreaming. We no longer think about what kind of city we will in 25 or 50 years — or even what kind of city we want to live in 10 years from now. "Yes, we are the sixth largest metropolitan region in the country. But our future will be mired with unlivable traffic congestion if we don’t step up our investment in rail transit — beginning with BeltLine rail."
