Connect with the Right People: Starting from scratch without any financial backing or family connections can be challenging, but it’s entirely possible to succeed with the right approach. In the fashion industry, clients often rely on stylists to curate and produce shoots, making them valuable contacts for aspiring photographers and filmmakers. By networking with stylists and showcasing your talents, you can establish yourself as a reliable collaborator, opening doors to opportunities despite starting with limited resources. 2. Build a Strong Portfolio: When you’re starting with little to no funds, building a portfolio can seem daunting, but it’s essential for gaining traction in the industry. Diversifying your portfolio is key, as it demonstrates your versatility and attracts a broader range of clients. While editorials may offer exposure, the real growth and financial stability often come from campaigns and advertisements. Starting small by collaborating with emerging brands or artists allows you to showcase your skills while gradually expanding your portfolio, even if it means investing your own money to a certain extent. 3. Collaborate Wisely: It’s crucial to navigate the fine line between collaboration and exploitation, especially when you’re starting from scratch. While collaboration is essential for growth, it’s essential to ensure that you’re not being taken advantage of in the name of exposure. Clearly defining the terms of collaboration, such as limiting the number of garments featured or setting boundaries, helps maintain a fair and respectful partnership. By prioritizing mutual benefit and ethical practices, you can build positive relationships and avoid exploitation in your journey towards success in the fashion industry. By following these steps, you can navigate the competitive fashion world and pave your way to success as a photographer or filmmaker. Remember, success takes time. The Importance of Video and Fashion Films In today’s fashion industry, video has become just as crucial as photography. Friday observation from Joe Pélissier - "Every time you look for consensus you go straight to mediocrity." This was a throwaway line by Oliviero Toscano in a SkyArts #photography documentary I watched a few years go.  However, I'd be surprised if many people know who he is? If you were working during the 1980s and 90s you would most certainly have come across his campaigns for Benetton Group. They were shocking, provocative and memorable. A man dying of Aids cradled as in a Pietà, a white baby breast-feeding against a black mother, a priest kissing a nun. You get the picture. They made the fashion brand Benetton a huge talking point. But it was never gratuitous, at least not in my opinion, because it drew attention to topics and discussions that were already in the public domain. In an age when we are terrified of giving offence, it's no longer possible for Oliviero's style of photography to exist. It's also no possible because we live in age of consensus.  Last year I was involved in branding project that had to be evaluated by over 80 (!!) technocrats. Not surprisingly it ended up being dull and mediocre. Consensus is most certainly the curse of creative freedom. It explains why so much advertising media today is forgettable. Creatives at work! That atmosphere at a photo shoot is always a special one. Well, okay, only some of them. But at my latest, it was just magic. Everyone was highly focused yet relaxed and serene. Here are some steps to organize a successful shoot: Concept Development: Define the theme, mood, and aesthetic you want to convey. This will guide everything from wardrobe choices to location selection. Team Assembly: Gather a team including a photographer, stylist, makeup artist, hair stylist, and models. Ensure they understand and align with your vision. Location Scouting: Choose locations that complement your concept. Consider indoor and outdoor settings, and obtain any necessary permits. Wardrobe Selection: Curate outfits that reflect your brand or personal style. Ensure they're clean, pressed, and fit the models well. Hair and Makeup: Work with the hair and makeup team to create looks that enhance the overall aesthetic. Set Design: If applicable, design sets or backgrounds that enhance the visual impact of the shoot. Equipment Setup: Coordinate with the photographer to ensure all necessary equipment is ready and functioning properly. Shooting Schedule: Plan out the shoot day, including specific shot lists and timings to maximize efficiency. Directing the Shoot: As the creative director, provide guidance to the team throughout the shoot to ensure the desired outcome is achieved. Post-Production: Review and select the best images from the shoot. Collaborate with a retoucher to refine the images and bring out their full potential.
