Circular and Ecodesign Workshop update! Join us on November 14th in London or online.
We had an overwhelmingly positive response to our Expression of Interest for a workshop on the new ISO standards, ecodesign regulation and activation of circular design practices.
Now you can sign up to join us for a 1-day workshop on November 14th, 9am-4pm UK time, in Central London — with the amazing Leyla Acaroglu and Jo Barnard in-person and myself online.
Sign up to join us here: https://lnkd.in/djU9F5Kn
Note: There are pricing options for fully and partially employed. Sign-ups will close on 31st October so we have time to prepare for the group.
The 1-day intensive workshop will offer effective cross-pollinating and networking opportunities for potential future collaborations. And in addition, you will get access to the circular futures online learning system with loads of additional content and full live session recordings for 6 months.
Super excited for this collaboration with Circular Futures
Let me know if you have any questions, and see you online in November!

Eco-design is a necessary approach to ensure our sustainable transition, and more and more manufacturers are adopting it.
But behind the label "Eco-designed," what does it actually mean?
For instance, take a manufacturer of building materials like Saint-Gobain, does an eco-design approach mean that the glass composition has been altered to include more recycled materials and reduce energy-intensive processes?
And where should we draw the line to meet customer needs and ensure the product remains appealing?
These are the kinds of questions Marie Dufour considered when developing the "Eco-design" course for the Climate School, aimed at companies, six months ago.
What she discovered is that there are complex and multifaceted realities behind this term: design and production choices must truly reduce our environmental footprint; it is crucial to ensure that eco-design efforts do not turn into mere marketing claims; we must verify that the gains achieved are not canceled out by overconsumption… and much more.
We invite you to explore all this in this new course, which offers tools to understand and manage trade-offs, insights into how to integrate eco-design into a global approach, and practical case studies shared by manufacturers and experts in the field.
A big thank you to everyone who made this course possible: Helene Teulon, Emmanuelle KOBIALKA, Xavier Vital, Dariusz Krzysztof GĄSIOREK, Stefan Koenig, Olivier Ledru, Claire Bottineau, Christophe Lelyon,Véronique Andriès, Alice Fruchart, Victor Beauchef, Florence Baitinger and of course, Pascal EVEILLARD for his insights on the importance of having a dedicated project manager to achieve an eco-designed production.

The European Ecodesign directive has gotten a significant upgrade to the new Ecodesign Regulation 🎉 As of mid July it’s now in force impacting nearly ALL products sold in the EU.
For those of us sustainability in design nerds we are pretty happy about these improvements, especially in light of the rapid progress towards circularity in the EU.
I was reading through the new additions and thinking about a report I was commissioned to write in the early 2000’s for the Australian Government reviewing all the global ecodesign laws. It’s very exciting to see such significant progress towards cleaning up the unsustainable acts of our profession and I can only hope that the current government under the leadership of the Honorable Tanya Plibersek takes similar action to codify #repair and #reuse and ban the burning of unsold good, increasing material use and normalising sustainability in product design.
I put together a summary of what’s changed and how this will impact designers and product managers/owners and companies as these new rules will apply to products produced and sold in the European marketplace, have legal ramifications and allow consumer groups to bring class action cases against manufactures who are not complying with the new ecodesign rules.
Over the years I’ve been asked by many progressive in-house design teams and consultancies to come in and train their staff on applying sustainability and circular design strategies from a science-based approach. These companies will have a significant advantages now that there is such an uptick in demand for these specialised design services. I'm curious if this new set of rules will trigger a wider and more progressive uptake of leadership in design for sustainability?

🌍 Important news for Business owners, designers and decision-makers….
Here are more regulatory updates from the EU directing design to be circular and sustainable. And to activate this faster, this is choosing specific industries to focus on, such as phones, furniture, shoes, textiles and more.
Business models and designers’ skill requirements will be impacted.
🚨 And while this is just happening in the EU, it is a sign of future regulation requirements for other areas like Australia.
To future proof yourselves, Business owners, designers and decision-makers need to learn how to include sustainable and circular design by default.
But designing for sustainability and regeneration is only one of three design pillars we need to re-harmonise the dominant human-centred and growth-focused way of living on the planet.
🛟 We need to embed in all human activity:
1. Sustainable and regenerative design
2. Inclusive and pluriversal design (designing to protect and allow for all ways of living such as traditional indigenous knowledge)
3. Responsibility and alignment (designing with ethics and collaborating with competitors to ensure sustainability, inclusiveness, and to restrain greed and uncontrolled growth)
Learn the foundations of these three design pillars and get access to powerful and exclusive circular, inclusive, and regenerative design tools in my upcoming Life-centred Design Foundations Online Course, starting 27th August.

📢 Last week, the new European standard EN 45560 on circular design of products was completed by CEN and CENELEC.
✅ ANEC welcomes this standard which we have helped develop and which can support the development of Ecodesign horizontal and product-specific rules.
🔄️ EN 45560:2024 can provide guidance on circular design to organisations designing or developing products under the scope of the Ecodesign legislation.
🧰 Think of it as a very hands-on toolbox for companies to examine circular design features and set circular targets. For each possible feature, the standard poses questions and provides examples as well as reference to additional relevant standards.
🔩In the context of the reaLIFEstandards project, we gave the consumer angle and provided our support during the final vote of the text. Thanks to our work, one win was to specify that spare parts should be available throughout the service life of the product.
As we transition from a linear to a more circular economy, legislation and standards can pave the way to more sustainable products.

It's well known that up to 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined at the design stage. As the pressure to create sustainable products increases, the challenge—and opportunity—lies in integrating cost efficiency with eco-friendly design principles.
For example, using tools that allow for precise carbon footprint calculations and scenario simulations, companies can explore various materials and processes to find the optimal balance.
By adopting these advanced tools and methods, companies can not only meet regulatory standards but also appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.
Sustainable design is not just good for the planet—it's smart business.
