While some models suggest it may only be a Category 1 hurricane—an outcome that seems increasingly unlikely —others indicate the potential for a major Category 3 storm. For communities that have already faced repeated damage over the past couple of years, the impacts could be catastrophic. Imagine this: in less than 72 hours, thousands of Gulf Coast residents could find themselves without homes. The situation could worsen if Helene maintains tropical storm strength as it moves 300 to 400 miles inland. Picture Dallas feeling the effects of a storm that initially made landfall in Galveston. Debby Makes Landfall in Florida as CAT 1 Hurricane! Hurricane Debby made landfall as a category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph just before 7:00 a.m. EDT Monday morning near Steinhatchee along Florida's Big Bend. The storm will continue to spread dangerous rainfall, gusty winds, and severe thunderstorms as it moves inland. As the storm crawls northeastward moving off towards the Southeast coast of Georgia and the Carolinas, the storm is expected to significantly slow down or even stall for a time. A stalled or slow-moving storm will significantly exacerbate the potential for historic, life-threatening flooding in the southeastern United States. This storm is rapidly intensifying and expected to make landfall later today, and be aware that tornado activity is possible even in areas not in the path of the storm. Stay safe and heed the warnings of your local emergency management officials. You're looking at a strengthening Hurricane Helene with maximum sustained wind speeds of 100 mph. The NHC currently expects Helene to continue rapidly intensifying to a high-end Category 3 hurricane by Thursday afternoon with winds of 115 mph. There is also still time for this storm to speed up before making landfall in Florida's Big Bend region late tonight, meaning high winds will be felt even farther inland. After landfall, the storm will gradually turn northwest and slow down over the Tennessee Valley by the weekend, bringing widespread flooding across much of the Southeastern U.S. and the Southern Appalachians. TAMPA BAY IMPACTS: In addition to tropical storm-force winds, we will also be dealing with tornadoes embedded within the storm’s bands, as well as storm surge as high winds push water along the coast today through Thursday evening. Expect fast moving bands of gusty winds and tropical downpours across Tampa Bay all day, along with a Tornado Watch until 8pm tonight.

As we wrap up the response to Tropical Storm Ernesto in the Virgin Islands, here's a recap of the data so far: Ernesto hit the Territory as a strong tropical storm around 8pm on the 13th of August. The center of Ernesto tracked over the territory in West End Tortola and just off the coast of western Peter Island between 7-8pm. The Virgin Islands experienced very strong winds, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over a 24-hour period. These conditions caused widespread flooding, rockfalls and storm surge throughout the Territory. The average rainfall recorded was approximately 5 inches, with the highest recorded rainfall at 8 inches. The highest wind gusts recorded was around 105 mph. Ernesto became a Category 1 hurricane as it moved away from the Virgin Islands. As we enter the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, we expect more systems to form in the region. This brings the possibility of additional storms or hurricanes tracking near or over the Virgin Islands, so #BeReady!

Hurricane Helene Intensifies to Category 2 Ahead of Expected Florida Landfall Strengthening overnight Thursday, Hurricane Helene is projected to make landfall in Florida late Thursday or early Friday. The National Hurricane Center has urged that all "life and property protection preparations" be swiftly completed within the next 24 hours. Much of Florida’s Gulf Coast is under a tropical storm warning, along with the Florida Keys and the entirety of the state’s Atlantic coast, as well as the coastlines of Georgia and South Carolina. Tropical storm warnings now reach as far north as Atlanta and Asheville, North Carolina, due to the anticipated "deep inland penetration of strong winds." Forecasters warn that heavy rainfall could lead to "catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and urban flooding," with landslides possible in the southern Appalachian region. Tropical Storm Watches are in place for northeastern Mexico, and watches may be needed for the southern Texas coast tonight. The system could strengthen into a hurricane by mid-week, posing a threat of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds for Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines starting Tuesday night. Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches may be issued Monday, and people should finalize their hurricane plans.
