The Typhoon-class submarine, also known as Project 941 Akula, holds the distinction of being the largest submarine ever constructed. Designed and built by the Soviet Union for the Soviet Navy, this nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine is a marvel of engineering. Measuring approximately 175 meters (574 feet) in length and 23 meters (75 feet) in width, the Typhoon-class features a multi-hulled design with five inner hulls, enhancing its structural integrity and survivability. The new #fleet-wide guidance from the US Navy’s top officer focuses on preparing the service for a potential #war with China by 2027 as the #maritime component of a joint “#warfighting ecosystem.” Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti will publicly issue her “America’s Warfighting #Navy,” guidance to the wider fleet this week, more than a year into leading the Navy. The plan outlines her priorities for the service, which include fixing maintenance backlogs and recruiting, according to the final draft reviewed by #USNI News. Dubbed “Project 33,” Franchetti’s service-wide guidance wrestles with preparing for war with China with a short time horizon and problems caused by legacy readiness and recruiting deficits and the #ships and #aircraft currently in inventory. “We cannot manifest a bigger traditional Navy in a few short years, nor will we rely on mass without the right #capabilities to win the sea control contest,” reads the plan. “Without those #resources, however, we will continue to prioritize readiness, #capability, and #capacity —in that order. We must recognize that the Navy faces real #financial and #industrial constraints, including the once-in-a-generation cost of recapitalizing our [sea-based] #strategic #nuclear #deterrent.” Franchetti identified seven areas to improve – chief of which is fielding mission-capable ships, #submarines and aircraft. Analysis - Bigger fleet, more firepower, jobs for decades – just add dollars! t is amazing what a little cold hard cash – an extra $11 billion bringing the total to $38 billion over 10 years to be exact – can do. The federal government has tried to work wonders by piling the cash into the defence budget to achieve three of what seemed like impossible goals in the shape of the future Royal Australian Navy fleet announced today. In its response to an analysis of the surface combatant fleet, commissioned in response to the Defence Strategic Review, there are more large frigates and destroyers and new classs of smaller but lethal frigates and large autonomous vessels. This plus their vastly increased missile launch capability answers persistent calls from the defence lobby for more firepower to counter China. Then the government offers security for the nation’s two naval shipbuilding centres. So the defence lobby is happy, the unions and state governments are happy – everyone is happy as the fleet expands from 11 to 26 vessels. Each sub costs $5B but can last 50 years. At the strategic level, the submarine force is really what the pentagon focuses on. Entire military bases and convoys can be obliterated in seconds, planes can be shot down and surface ships sunk. But subs are hidden and can remain hidden, they are the real difference at the strategic level.
